The townsite was first settled by English colonists in 1636 as part of Stratford-upon-Avon on Long Island. When the area became part of Hartford County in 1814, the original town site was split between Great Britain and Connecticut. In 1907, two incorporated villages were added to form what is now known as Bristol: Westville and Easton. At that time there were only 4 inhabited buildings within the boundaries of both villages—all dating back to 1800s when they were separate hamlets or farms belonging to individual landowners. In 2007–2008, Mayor John Stroud initiated comprehensive planning for what would become known as "The New Towns Initiative." This effort aimed to create a communitywide infrastructure including public facilities such as libraries, schools and parks; economic development opportunities; and transportation infrastructure including access to highways and mass transit systems.
