This range became known as "The Colonel" because it was used by top brass from all over the country to shoot against stationary targets at various ranges around the city. In 1916,Captain William Pomeroy founded the American Rifle Club of New Haven (ARCNH), which soon became one of the most influential and successful rifle clubs in America. ARCNH moved its operations to Bristol in 1922 and continued to operate there until it disbanded in 1955 due to lack of membership and financial problems. Bristol's long history with target shooting is also reflected in its many annual target shoots that have taken place throughout the year since 1907- including two large events each year during May & July called "The Colonel Challenge", which are now considered major marketing opportunities for local businesses involved inTarget Shooting Events (TSE). This diversity helped make Bristol an important center for political activism during both World Wars I and II; examples include successful petition drives preceding each conflict that led directly to improvements for war veterans living within town limits such as housing loans and education opportunities through vocational training programs run by local churches affiliated with national organizations like Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC). One major civic achievement during recent times has beenthe establishment ofthe Town Hall Complex situated on Center Street between High Street and Elm Street in downtown Bristol which houses municipal offices including clerk’s office, public information officer (PIO), zoning administrator/planner/lifeguardian office etc., library services including cardiology research lab; fire department; police department; EMS service; park & recreation department etc.; private schools (elementary school through high school) viz., Holy Cross Preparatory School (& adjacent elementary high school), Stonington Day School(& adjacent middle school), First Congregational Church (& adjacent Presbyterian church), Episcopal Academy (& adjacent Roman Catholic academy), Islamaqi Cultural Center (& adjoining mosque).
