Bristol has been inhabited for over 350 years and is one of the oldest towns in Connecticut. In 1664, before English settlers arrived in what is now Bristol, the area was part of Saybrook Colony. In 1691, Bristol became part of Hartford County and had a total population of 2,815. After New Haven became an independent city in 1810, it began to hemorrhage inhabitants as newcomers founded new towns and villages throughout the state. By 1850, only about 1 percent of the population remained in Bristol; however its significance as a manufacturing center did not diminish. From 1870 until 1990 when it merged with West Hartford to form the current incorporated municipality (the merger having been approved by voters), Bristol thrived as a bedroom community for west Hartford residents while also serving as an important transportation hub connecting west Hartford with other municipalities in central Connecticut.
