Everytown for Gun Safety (ETGS) is a grassroots organization that has been fighting to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and domestic violence victims since 1998. ETGS was founded by former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who had the vision to make New York City the safest city in America. This proposal too also failed to pass because of political muscle from these industries. The first handgun registry law in Connecticut came into effect in 1959. This law required owners of handguns over 18 years old to provide proof of ownership and registration with the state government. The requirement lasted until 1974 when it was repealed due to lack of support from firearms retailers and manufacturers alike. Gun control advocates were not willing to give up their fight however, so they started a group called “The Brady Campaign” which lobbied tirelessly on behalf of gun safety laws reform across America. After successful lobbying campaigns throughout America, amendments were passed into law in 1990 that made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to purchase or possess any handgun without prior written consent from a parent or guardian. These reforms helped reduce gun deaths by 40% between 1990-1994! Despite these successes, there have been several attempts at passing new gun control laws through Connecticut legislatures over the past few decades including but not limited to: -A 2005 bill attemptingto ban single shot rifles within 100 feet of schools; this measure also failed; -A 2006 attempt prohibiting people with mental health issues from owning firearms; this legislation too failed; -An 2009 attempt proposing increasing fines for individuals caught possessing assault weapons or large capacity magazines without permit; this measure also failed; -2011 proposalsincreasing finesfor individuals convictedof felonies involving arms or ammunition;; both measures passed However these increases were later eliminated after public outcry.;
