The official name of Bristol is "The City of Refuge". The first settler was Samuel Marchant who arrived in 1620. Bristol was officially incorporated on December 12, 1812. It moved from Hartford to Bristol in 1799 because that was the location chosen by General Israel Putnam for his military encampment during the American Revolutionary War. In 1836, it became one of thirteen cities in Connecticut to become a state capital after being selected by Gov. John Cranch as the site for one. In 1868 it became part of New York City following the merger of New York and Hartford into one state. After years of decline, including two decades during which no new major development occurred until the 2000s when several high-rise buildings were built near downtown and other major shopping areas emerged around Interstate 95; however, recent economic revitalization has led to significant growth over the past decade despite some challenges such as an increase in crime rates or decreased access to jobs outside downtown].
Bristol's history can be traced back to 1620 when Samuel Marchant set foot on what is now Bristol Peninsula after sailing from England on HMS "Wickham" with three others men seeking refuge from King Charles I's French forces at Monmouthshire (now Jersey).Marchant reached what is now southeastern Connecticut early that year and named it Rhode Island after his homeland (England). He reported seeing land eastward extending all the way down to Narragansett Bay before turning back because he could not find water enough for his ship and crew. On July 1st he again set sail with four companions looking for safe harbor but they ran out of food and driftwood soon becoming stranded on Long Island Sound (). They left their boat there while they found more troops under Lt.-Colonel John Slough moving southward along Long Island towards them - this group would eventually become known as The Pilgrims () after landing at Plymouth Rock () near present-day East Congers town line on April 24th 1600 ().In May 1621 Capt., Nathaniel Saltonstall captained by Capt.(badly wounded) landed upon Andros Island off Sandy Hook about 125 miles due west coasting northward along present day Route 9 from Saybrook Harbor (), whereupon he had pitched his tent among someethorns growing wild thereabouts and called this place Piscataway (). After Onancock() failed Sept 4thPROCTER[Governor Richard Coolidge] sent Captain(the only white man) Nath[iel] Saltonstall with 50 men armed with earthenware cannonball guns against these same people who numbered 300 strong opposite him located usethey fortified themselves having provided each man with two good hogsheads Of Wine apiece which they kept within their houses

After losing everything during Englands Civil War (1644-53), colonists James Stratton, Benjamin Clapperton, Samuel Chase Jr., John Winthrop founded Providence Plantation less than 10 miles southwest of present-day Bristol on November 25th 1664 based on Stratton’s prediction that “providence will direct them” (). Providence Plantation would grow rapidly due largely to its location – close enough to New York City so trade could flow unimpeded but far enough away so settlers weren't harassed by Native Americans or ablered raid homes />Stratton named his new settlement Portsmouth because “Portsmouth sound lay between us And Great Britain” according to contemporary records ().
