Bristol, Connecticut is a small town located in the southern part of the state of Connecticut. The population was 9,500 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by New Haven to the south, Stamford to the east and north, and Waterbury to the west. The town is named after Bristol, England which was founded in 1624 by Sir John Norrington. The first settlers came from England in 1635 and began building log cabins on what is now known as Elm Street. In 1784, Englishman James Fenton purchased land within Bristol and began developing it into a town with a population of 350 residents.Fenton built two mills which gave Bristol an important role in early industrial development in Connecticut. One mill became known as Norrington Manufacturing Company while the other became known as Hartford Manufacturing Company.In 1819, Bristol merged with neighboring towns Waterbury and Stamford forming what is now called Bridgeport-Stamford Township.The growth of Bridgeport-Stamford Township led to increased traffic along Route 128 which made it difficult for pedestrians and cyclists to get around town centers or reach their destinations easily. However, this did not stop developers from coming up with new ways to make life easier for commuters and shoppers who could no longer rely on carpooling or public transportation to get aroundtowns."Today, Bristol remains one of America’s most vibrant small towns," according to its website "brought about by its entrepreneurial spirit; great shopping opportunities; easy access to roads and highways; lively nightlife; rich cultural experiences; top-notch education opportunities – even for young people." In 1898, an Italian inventor named Roberto Gambetti created a device known as an "automatic ballistics calculator," which allowed shooters to determine how many shots it would take for their target to be killed or wounded. This invention helped make BB guns more effective at ranges beyond 100 meters, allowing them become commonweapons on college campuses and other large urban areas. In 1907, Japanese engineers developed a handgun using round-shaped metal balls that could be fired with arrows or rifles. This weapon was called the "Kanbun." Bristol, Connecticut is a borough in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 26,879. Bristol was first settled in 1664 by Puritan colonists from New England. The town was originally named after Bristowe Parish in Wiltshire, England. The town's history can be traced back to 1664 when Puritans from New England founded Bristol on the east bank of the river Merrimac and named it for their parish in Wiltshire, England. In 1795, Bristol became part of Hartford County and lost its city status. During World War II, Bristol was one of several American towns that housed military installations including Naval Station Groton (later Naval Air Station Fairfield) and Naval Weapons Station West Haven. A number of factories were also built here during the war such as Ford Motor Company's River Rouge plant and Bethlehem Steel Company’s Norwich plant. In 1950, Bristol merged with other smaller towns within Hartford County to form Bloomfield Township. In 1970 the township disbanded and all but two residents moved to the new Bloomfield Village development near North Bridge Road/Route 128 in East Windsor while some remained at Southbridge Drive/Route 524 until they left in 1997 when they formed their own municipality called "Southbridge." What followed has been an interesting history: first as a bedroom community for neighboring East Windsor; then as a manufacturing center for Eastern Connecticut; finally as part of Bloomfield Township before disbanding completely in 2000 to form its own municipality - Southbridge - once again with an interesting history!
Bristol, Connecticut was founded by the English in 1664 as a small trading post on the southern coast of Long Island. The town quickly grew and developed into an important commercial center during the colonial period. Bristol became a Union territory in 1802 and played an important role in the American Revolution. After the war, Bristol experienced rapid growth as a manufacturing town and served as the capital of Rhode Island from 1768 to 1784. In 1837, Bristol was renamed Hartford after President James K. Polk's visit to that city.
