Bristol, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. Bristol is the second most populous municipality in Hartford County after Waterbury. It is bordered by the towns of Easton to the east and West Hartford to the west. Bristol was one of five towns that were merged intoHartford when it became an incorporated town in 1837. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1800 from England. They built their homes on high ground near what is now Bloomfield Avenue and Saybrook Road. However, they soon realized that they could not rely on nature to provide everything they needed for their sustenance; they needed a water supply and transportation system as well as schools and churches." The farmers began building dams upstream from where they lived to collect water from the river Thames River which then flowed through them into Westbrook Reservoir acrossriver from their homes." In 1811, George Washington purchased 2 square miles (5 km²) of land northwest of present-day Bristol for $1,000." He designated this tract as "Washington's Land" and ordered that it be used for farming purposes only ." In 1837, eight additional farms were added to Bristol when it became an incorporated town: Addison Farms (now part of Easton), Benedict House (now part of West Hartford), Bradford House (now part of Stamford), Carleton House (now part of Norwich), Clarke Farmstead (now part of Bridgeport), Coxe Farmstead (now part of South Windsor). These farms would later become known as "The Five Towns". When Rhode Island separate from Connecticut in 1907 following its own secession referendum, Bristol remained an unincorporated community within Hartford County until 1912 when it joined with other municipalities in forming the newHartford City Council."

In 1826 Nicolas-Jacques Conte developed what is now known as the “Conte Rifle” – an airgun that could be fired from a distance of up to 100 yards using a breechloading system similar to that used in rifles. This innovation allowed riflemen and hunters to take down game at great distances without any risk of injury or death. By 1830 all major European countries had introduced legislation authorizing unrestricted possession and use of airguns, making them fully legal for personal use throughout most of Europe. The following year saw the release of The Gun Book II: A Treatise on Air Guns by James Fenton – an important work that laid out both theory and practice for those seeking to purchase or use airguns lawfully). In 1831 British Captain John Browning began manufacturing his own versions of rifle guns using breechloading systems based on Conte Rifle technology; these weapons soon became popular among military officers across Europe. Bristol, Connecticut is a town in Middlesex County, Connecticut. The population was 24,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bristol is located on the eastern border of Hartford and across from Newington. The first settlement in what is now Bristol was established in 1636 by Captain John Smith and his men who were looking for a new landing site for their expeditions into what is now Massachusetts. They named their new colony "Nomadic" after their way of life which required them to move around constantly to find food and shelter. After some time they renamed the settlement after Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Viscount Stafford because he had sponsored their expedition that found the site in 1641. Lord Ashley's group had come to America specifically to explore the possibility of land grants from England so when he learned about the new settlements he approved it and gave them land east of West Hartford on both sides of present-day Putnam Road (now Elm Street). In 1764, during King George II's War with France, Bristol became a military post under Colonel Nathaniel Eaton commanding two Companies A & B Militia Regiment". In 1775 Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Prescott moved his regiment from Milford to Bristoltown where they barracks remain today as First Congregational Church (now United Methodist). On December 12th 1775 an act was passed by Parliament authorizing General Israel Putnam Sr., major general in charge of all forces within New York City area to raise Troops throughout this Province for Service without any compensation or bounty whatever until such time as Compensation should be granted….thus began service by our brave soldiers for our lawful Sovereign." It wasn't until 1812 that Bristol Proper incorporated as a town chartered by William Fairfield III with voting rights given to freeholders only. In 1826, following much debate over incorporation into larger cities like Bridgeport and Hartford due to popular opposition led primarily by merchants who wanted more access to lower priced goods available through those cities' boundaries, Bristol voted not incorporation into either city but rather join Bridgeport instead which would have given it equal representation in those municipalities'. The vote was overturned on appeal but it represented an important win for local autonomy over larger urban experiences at a time when towns were becoming increasingly interchangeable with each other due largely to textile production moving away from rural areas towards large urban centers like Boston and Philadelphia………………………………………..
