After that event no more ships ventured upriver until 1714 when Lt.-Colonel Edward Braddock's ill-fated Expedition led by Major John Montague sailed downriver under cover of night from British Harbor at Narragansett Bay for unknown reasons but discovered North America insteadsto establish British claims over present-day Massachusetts . In 1784, George Washington inspected troops marching under General James Kieft through Bridgeport before crossing into Canada at Stamford Ferry ().
