In 1868, when George Washington crossed over from Long Island into New York City on horseback for his final political campaign before leaving office, he stopped at what is now called Elmwood Avenue near present day Main Street for dinner with his family before continuing on to White House grounds where he delivered his Farewell Address. President Andrew Johnson also stopped here while traveling downriver from New York City on his way back to Washington D.C., stopping at what is now known as Elmwood Avenue just east of Main Street for lunch with Govs Joseph Hooker and James Kappler on July 10th 1865..

Bridgeport, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 33,622 at the 2010 census. Bridgeport is the largest city and county seat of Fairfield County. It lies on the banks of the Raritan River and is surrounded by Putnam, Hartford, New Haven, and Westchester Counties. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Bridgeport was made by colonists from England in 1614. The town was founded on May 12, 1781 by petition from Lieutenant Colonel John Childs of Long Island Colony to his fellow Englishmen living in Connecticut as refugees after the American Revolution. At its peak it had a population of over 200 people; however, because of immigration restrictions it peaked at only 10 people in 1810 before slowly declining until reaching its current size. Bridgeport became an incorporated municipality on March 14th 1870 under an act of the General Assembly approved that day by an overwhelming margin (287 to 1). On June 15th 1907 a fire destroyed most of downtown BridgePORT when a large electric transformer exploded during testing for an new electric streetlight system being developed there. In 1951 Mayor Richard Ives appointed Drury Lane High School's first ever Superintendent which led to drastic changes later that year when he merged all high school operations into one school district with widespread consolidation throughout Fairfield County then followed suit with other local districts within Fairfield County as well including Saybrook-North Haven Schools District No 9 and Groton-West Hartford Schools District No 8 thereby creating one comprehensive school district with over 400 schools across Fairfield County including BridgePORT!
