The town was founded by General Nicholas Ashley in 1736 as an English military fortification against French and Indian raids in what is now southern Connecticut. From 1751 until 1814 Bridgeport served as headquarters for Colonel Benedict Arnold's forces during the American Revolution Bridgeport became a municipality on April 12, 1834. On February 27, 1845 it became a state capital when Hartford was split into two parts due to political considerations following the Mexican–American War. On May 3 of that year Bridgeport became one of five towns (the others being Danbury, Norwalk, West Hartford and East Hartford) within newHartford Township when that township was created from portions of Stamford and Milford Townships. In 1888 Bridgeport merged with Norwalk Township so that all three towns had equal representation in both chambers of State Legislature before becoming again separate municipalities on January 1st 1900 It has been home to many famous people such as: Abraham Lincoln
