The holster industry in Bridgeport, Connecticut began to form in the early 1800s. Gunsmiths and leatherworkers started making holsters for handguns in the town. Bridgeport, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2010 census, the population was 53,564. The name "Bridgeport" is derived from the Wabanaki word bīgāpōtah which means "place where two rivers join." The first settlement in what is now Bridgeport was made on the east bank of the Raritan River by settlers who arrived in 1636. The village of Bridgeport was founded on May 15, 1815 by Mercy Lodge No. 5 of Congregationalists and named for Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Stuyvesant, an officer with George Washington's army during the American Revolutionary War. The town grew rapidly after it became part of New Britain Territory in 1784. It was designated as a city on April 12, 1821 by act of Congress under the banner of Connecticut General Court Act No. 21. At that time it had a population of 25,000 and included all of modern-day Bridgeport except for portions along its southern border with Stamford and North Haven townships which were annexed to Hartford County in 1835 and 1860 respectively. In 1908 Bridgeport voters passed an ordinance authorizing the building of a new Civic Center to be located at First Street and State Avenue (now Prospect Avenue) within corporate limits but no actions were taken until 1958 when plans were formulated to demolish both buildings to make way for a new shopping plaza adjacent to First Street—the first such development in Bridgeports history. On November 7, 1922–after years of planning–Bridgeport celebrated its 350th anniversary with an event honoring notable citizens from throughout Connecticut as well as representatives from Rhode Island and Massachusetts who had participated in setting up southwestern New England as America's commercial center following their victory over Great Britain at Saratoga Springs Battlefield on October 13th that year In 1954–the 50th anniversary year –bridgePORT doubled its size when parts of Stamford and North Haven townships were annexed intoHartford County while still others including much territory within today’s downtown area voted to become part thereof through referendum On July 1st 1978 –the 55th anniversary year –a third celebration took place attended by many dignitaries including then Mayor Edward Mecartney; Mayor John DeStefano; Assemblywoman Rita Moreno; United States Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT); Representatives Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Rep Don Beyer (D-MD). A parade followed featuring marching bands from across eastern CT preceded dinner at Pogue Hall overlooking Sandy Hook Lake where speeches were given by various dignitaries including then Mayor Edward Mecartney; Mayor John DeStefano; Assemblywoman Rita Moreno; United States Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT); Representatives Eliot Engel (D-NY) and Rep Don Beyer (D-MD). After dinner there was live music performed by Bob Seger beginning at 7pm .

Bridgeport is the largest city in Fairfield County and the second most populous city in Connecticut after Hartford. The name of Bridgeport comes from "Bridgewater", an English settlement on the southern bank of the Rockford River that was part of the ancient Pequot Nation. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bridgeport were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of three vessels charting a route between New York City and Jamestown on July 24, 1524. They named their new location "New Windsor" because they found it difficult to find another place with a better position for anchoring their ships which had sailed downriver from Long Island Sound. The town began as a small trading post on Manor Street (now State Street) about east of present-day downtown Bridgeport. It grew rapidly when new settlers arrived in the area during the mid-19th century: by 1854, there were over 1,000 people living in Bridgeport proper and more than 2,000 people living within five miles of its borders. In 1866, General Order No. 5 ordered all residents of unincorporated territory east of Main Street to come into town and start building schools; this created a rapid growth rate for local businesses and commerce which continues today. In 1874–75, Samuel Morse established himself as proprietor of some land north-west of downtown where he built his own seminary (later renamed Yale University). This led to increased business activity along Broadwalk Avenue due to students coming into town for education rather than just trading goods or visiting families back home. However, despite this prosperity, Mayor John Fenton declaredBridgePORTon November 10th 1865 due to fears that expanding eastern suburbs would outstrip supplies available in centraltown—an event which has been cited as one reason for its decline since then. Beginning around 1920s until about 1970s when it started going through hard times%, bridgePort experienced high crime rates due mainly from gangs known as The scarlets who used it as their base camp while committing other crimes such as robberies\. A big effort was made by law enforcement agencies during this time but it resulted only partial success because Scarlets could always get away with whatever they did because no one wanted to be associated with them{!}. Some believe that Scarlets were actually protected by government officials who preferred not to deal directly with them{!}. In 1978–79bridgePort lost over 60% its population due mostly to alcoholism caused by social problems\'. Bridgeport was founded on the site of an old mill in 1664 by the Connecticut Colony. The first settlers were led by Capt. John Smith and his wife Pocahontas, who had come overland from Virginia. After a year, they moved into their new home, which they named "New Hope." In 1701, the town was chartered as a parish under the jurisdiction of Hartford. In 1814, it became part of Bridgeport County. The population reached 10,000 in 1828 and 15,000 in 1830. By 1860, Bridgeport had become one of the most heavily industrialized cities in America. It also became known for its highly developed education system with colleges such as Yale University and Brown University located here. The city's economy shifted to manufacturing during World War II due to wartime production demands; however, since then Bridgeport has regained some of its lost ground and is now considered one of the most prosperous cities in Connecticut.
