Bridgeport is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 33,603 at the 2010 census. Bridgeport is the largest city in Fairfield County and is considered to be one of the most culturally active cities in the state. The name "Bridgeport" originated from an English trading post called Wappingers Ferry on the Connecticut River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bridgeport were Dutch traders who established a trading post at what is now Northampton Street and State Street in 1624. British traders also visited this area in early 17th century; however, they never developed any significant trade here. In 1785, John Trumbull built a ferry across the river at Wappingers Ferry which became known as Trumbull's Wharf because of its importance for shipping goods between Hartford and New York City. In 1812, Congress passed an act authorizing construction of a road from Springfield to West Haven via Bridgeport and other townships in Fairfield County. The road was named after General Israel Putnam (1756-1837), one of the leading figures in American Revolutionary War effort and founder of Hartford Courthouse (now Yale University). The first bridge over the Connecticut River was built by Colonel Ezra Stiles near present-day Northampton Street in 1814; it was destroyed by flooding two years later but still stands as a testimony to engineering skills then being relatively new. On May 24, 1827, Trumbull erected his second tollbridge over the river at what is now Southold Road; it replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire three years earlier. This bridge served as both vehicular and pedestrian traffic crossing into New York City until 1955 when Interstate 95 replaced it as part of a larger project widening I-95 through Connecticut In 1916–1920 Bridgeport Municipal Court operated out of temporary buildings located on Main Street between Water Lane and High Streets before moved permanently to First Congregational Church on Park Avenue during World War I due to concerns about overcrowding within municipalcourts statewide . In 1938, following changes brought about by Franklin D Roosevelt’s New Deal programs, Bridgeport Mayor James Grafton appointed Jane Addams as director of social welfare for all municipalities of Fairfield County . Her work led to passage of legislation establishing building codes throughout Fairfield County which helped reduce overcrowding within municipal courthouses throughoutthe county . In 1965–1967 major renovations were made to Town Hall which included installation of new public address systems , original stained glass windows , additionofa newsstand ,and expansion otthetown center On October 5,,1968 Trumbull proclaimed October 5th BridgePORT DAY - A special day recognizingTrumbullssignificant contributions thereto
