Bridgeport is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 23,545 at the 2010 census. Bridgeport is part of the Hartford-West Haven-East Hartford, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by New Haven to the north and east, Waterbury to the south and west, and Hartford to the southwest. The downtown area has been called "the cultural heart of Connecticut." The first settlers in what would become Bridgeport arrived on October 7, 1635 by ship from England. They were led by Colonel Nicholas Congreves who had come overland from Long Island with supplies for General John Greenleaf Whittier's forces during King Philip's War (1675-76). On November 3rd, 1635, Congreves' group erected a small wooden cross on what is now Main Street because no one knew where they should go next. Heading westward from their landing point on Long Island Sound they soon realized that there was land further down and so founded the town of Stratford which today bears their name. In 1784 some men from Derby County came ashore at Milford Haven seeking passage to Rhode Island but foundering after hitting rocks in navigation; when they finally made it back to Derby they informed their counterparts in Bridgeport about this adventure and got permission from two goodsmen who owned land near Milford Haven to build Fort Derby as a trading post between those two towns. Bridgeport was first settled in 1636 by the Pequot people. The area now known as Bridgeport was part of Connecticut until 1784, when it became a part of Pennsylvania. The town was founded on the site of what is now the southernmost tip of Long Island Sound, and rapidly grew in size thanks to its location at the intersection of several major shipping routes. In 1814, Bridgeport became one of the United States’ “original thirteen” cities, and soon became an important commercial center with a large population and economy. By 1830, Bridgeport had become one of the most prosperous cities in America, and its growth continued into the 19th century. However, during this time period significant changes began to take place in Bridgeport that would eventually lead to its decline as a cultural and economic center. These changes includedthe arrival of large numbers of Irish immigrants who were unable to find work in existing businesses and instead decided to settle in Bridgeport; this led to increased crime rates which further damaged Bridgeport's reputation; furthermore, rapid plantation throughout much of central New England caused a decrease in demand for goods produced within bridgesville; this ultimately led to a decline in industry and business opportunities for locals. In 1871, after years of decline, Bridgeport lost its city charter but regained it following a campaign by local residents. Althoughbridgeville experienced some resurgence over the next few decades there was never really enough traffic or investment from outside sources to revive the city's economy In recent years there has been renewed interest within the community around restoring bridgeville as an educational destination for visitors from all over New England
