In 1837, the Hartford Gun Club was founded in Bridgeport and soon became one of the most important arms manufacturers in the United States. In 1866, Connecticut passed its first gun control law and handguns began to be outlawed.

Additionally there are several large companies that have their headquarters or major functions outside of Bridgeport but do significant business here including Monsanto Company (Monsanto), PepsiCo Inc., IBM Corp., JDS Uniphase Corporation, NEC Corporation and Verizon Wireless Home Phone Services

Bridgeport, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 30,851 at the 2010 census. Bridgeport is the county seat of Hartford County and home to the University of Bridgeport. The city of Hartford lies to the north and west and Stamford to the east. The first European settlement in what is now Bridgeport was made by Nicholas Pequot Indians in 1606-7. In 1664, English colonists from New England founded a small outpost on Easton Point on Long Island Sound called Holyoke Plantation because of its then-prominent position as an agricultural center for eastern Connecticut. When Massachusetts Bay Colony became a state in 1785,Holyoke Plantation was transferred toHartford County under that state's new government structure. Bridgeport grew rapidly during both American Revolutionary War and early 19th century periods as various waves of immigrants arrived: primarily Germans (1781–1815), Irish (1816–1912), Italians (1913–1945), Poles (1945–1975), Japanese Americans (1946–1955) – each adding their own cultural flavors to local cuisine and life styles. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, many Japanese Americans returned home; however, some remained until 1957 when they were forcibly removed from their homes by order of President Harry S Truman pursuant to Executive Order 9066 which aimed at preventing prejudice against minority groups living within the United States mainland following World War II. In 1951, UConn moved from Storrs into what is now Bridgeport as part of a larger communitywide effort to move all institutions out of rural areas into large metropolitan areas across the country during this period known as "ghettoization." From 1951 through 1965, BridgePORT developed into one of America's largest shopping malls with more than 2 million square feet (.982 million m²). The mall provided an easy access to good jobs for residents throughout southeastern Connecticut while also promoting increased social activity within the growing town center by providing a mix of retail stores including restaurants and movie theaters along with office space for local businesses such as law firms and engineering companies among others. Today, UConn remains one of few universities located outside metropolitan Boston or New York City limits despite having over 50% student enrollment growth since 2000 while still employing close to 60% fulltime faculty members concentrated around campus core facilities comprising more than 120 undergraduate majors/degrees possible divided evenly between men and women; making UConn oneAmerica's most versatile university powerhouses offering world-class research opportunities across multiple faculties plus adjacent applied sciences programs In addition to its rich history & culture so unique unto itself -BridgePORT has been witness too some truly horrifing events which have taken place here recently but will not be referenced again here simply bc its too public knowledge already -Please bear with me as I go through this document: bridgePORT Massacre happened on april 15th 2009 when 8 individuals walked into Local Fast food restaurant called Yum! Brands Incorporated called Garden View plaza & opened fire indiscriminately shooting people who were seated inside - noone was killed& everyone survived except 2 people who got shot right next door nameless gunman who remains at large(s)
Bridgeport was first settled in 1624 by John Dux and his wife, Mary. The town was named for the bridge over the Connecticut River that was built at that time. In 1814, the town was consolidated withBridgeport (New London) to form the current city of Bridgeport.
