Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%of the population

Ansonia, Connecticut is a small town located in Windham County, Connecticut. The town was founded on November 1, 1795 by the merger of two smaller settlements: Ansonia and North Ansonia. The name Ansonia comes from the name of an early settler, Isaac Anson. The first permanent residents of the town were French Canadian settlers who had come to work in the fur trade in what is now Maine. By 1801, there were about 150 people living in the town. In 1814, Ansonia became one of twelve towns placed under common management by the Connecticut General Assembly because they were experiencing financial difficulties. This arrangement allowed for more rapid growth and development within the community. In 1828, a school was built in the town and named after John Atherton, a prominent lawyer from Hartford who had helped organize New England's anti-slavery movement. In 1868–69, a new courthouse was built and named after George Washington Carver Jr.. In 1870–71, another school was built in town and named after Reverend Samuel Morse (1817-1875). Ansonia's economic prosperity stemmed from its location as an agricultural center for windmills that produced flour for local mills and other purposes. The millers also exported flour to England and other European countries; this export led to increased business for the Merchants National Bank which stood downtown until 1951 when it moved into larger quarters on Main Street. A large increase in population took place during World War II with many soldiers coming to live in Ansonia; however, few businesses survived war times due to competition from nearby towns that grew much faster during wartime boom times. When peace returned to America following World War II, most commercial enterprises closed down or changed hands quickly due to changes brought about by inflationary trends at that time throughout most northeastern areas at least 50%. However, some businesses did continue operations through various incarnations over time such as Gamber Inc., which manufactured radios until 1984 when it merged with Radio Corporation of America (RCA) becoming part of ABC Radio Corporation (later CBS Broadcasting System).
