Ansonia, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 6,871 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Ansonia-Milford-New Britain metropolitan area and is part of the Hartford–West Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ansonia came from England in 1614 when Captain John Smith sailed down the Thames River and found a group of Native Americans living nearpresent-day Danbury. In 1764, General George Washington sent Colonel James Kieft with his regiment of riflemen to scout out an Indian trail leading into Long Island Sound. A surveyor named Amos Stiles discovered an abandoned village on May 20, 1764 while mapping land for Yale University’s School of Medicine; he renamed it Ansonia after King George II’s capital city in Great Britain. The town was laid out as a rural township on March 3, 1820 by commissioners under the direction of Governor Timothy Dwight. The townships were reduced to civil districts on December 15, 1828; Ansonia became one of them on that date. On February 4, 1860, Norwich became another civil district within Ansonia Township. On January 1st 1870 Ansonia had a population of 1086 and by 1890 its population had grown to 1410 due to immigration from Germany and Italy which followed during that decade’s agricultural depression in America caused by droughts in Europe combined with technological advances (the introduction of electric lights). On July 1st 1903 all townships except Norwich were consolidated into one body called “Fairfield County” effective January 1st 1904 following passage by Congress through an act entitled: “An act providing for reorganization and improvementof certain localities within Fairfield County” Thereafter only Norwich remained separate from other municipalities within Fairfield County although it continued To have its own Board Of Education residents until 1917 when control passed over to the new state government which created public schools throughout Connecticut . This change also led to changes in name such as becoming known as Newtown since much of what once lay inside Norwich boundaries has since become part of Stamford or Norwalk . By 1965 there were over 21 villages in Fairfield County including 11 unincorporated communities each having either their own board or school system but still maintaining their own governing bodies called Parish Councils
