The first post office opened in 1813 and was called Starksville; it changed its name to Ansonia on November 1, 1818. The first general store was built in 1819 and the first physician practicing here was Dr. Edward Sockwell in 1840. In 1907 Ansonia had 2 sawmills and 16 grist mills; now there are only 3 sawmills remaining and 1 grist mill still operational (the Grayslake Mills). One of the most important businesses for the town during its early years was Griggs grocery store which operated from 1830 to 1865 when it moved to Watertown Wethersfield; later it became one of the largest department stores in America with over 100 locations across 5 states before closing its doors for good in 1981. The towns growth slowed significantly following World War II as many manufacturing jobs left during the war while new technology replaced some of these lost jobs such as computers and autos; this migration also affected housing development as many factories closed down leaving areas like North Avenue disinvested while other sections grew high-density housing developments like South Avenue near Interstate 95 which remains one of Ansonia's most prominent streets today despite having few commercial properties within walking distance of it today due to gentrification trends..
