The first post office in Ansonia was established on September 5, 1792. The first settler in the township was George Gaylord who came from New York City in 1792. He built a house on the site of today's Main Street and called it "Gailylord's Manor." The population of Ansonia increased rapidly following its incorporation into Hartford as an incorporated town. By 1830, there were over 300 residents living in the township. The growth of the town also led to an increase in job opportunities for residents. A water system was started within Ansonia by Drury & Hynes on October 12, 1834 and completed by August 1, 1840. This system provided clean drinking water to all inhabitants of Ansonia and transported water from numerous sources including Black Brook reservoir and White Brook Reservoirs located near Vernon. It is said that one possible reason for this early success was due to Mayor Dyer's efforts to promote public education within the town limits as well as his investment into infrastructure projects such as a new blacksmith shop and a gristmill which soon became one of downtown's most popular tourist attractions . In 1865, when Vernon merged with Ansonia-Vernon Township, Mayor Dyer transferred his position to become headmaster at Northcentral High School where he remained until his death on May 8th, 1928 .
