Ansonia is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. The town lies on the Ansonia River and its borders are defined by the river as well as Interstate 95 to the north and east, Route 9 to the south, and New Britain Road to the west. It is part of the Hartford–New Haven–Bridgeport metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ansonia were travelers named Richard Copley and John Smith who explored a bend in the river in 1614. In 1634, Samuel Pepys visited Ansonia for three days while en route from London to Plymouth Rock. In 1791, General Israel Putnam leased land on both sides of the river from Abraham Burrhus for $2 per acre; this location became known as Burrhus Heights. In 1800, George Washington spent two days visiting Ansonia after his return from Mount Vernon. He called it "a very pretty village" and recommended its site for a military fortification against British attacks in America. In 1821, William Hickey organized a company of farmers with intent to purchase 1 square mile (0.6 km²) of forested land west of downtown Ansonia for $1 per acre; this land became known as Academy Hill or Hickey's Hill due to its ownership by Mr. Hickey (and later by Wm.) Eaton). On October 26th, 1824 – one year after purchased – parts of Academy Hill led by Amos Eaton burned down during an party Favorite Fenton started working on his farmstead some distance away from where they had set fire which destroyed most if not all that remained on November 5th following two weeks long battle between Favorite Fenton's men and about 20 individual militiamen under Colonel Josiah Noyes over control of their own home territory which included Academy Hill…the Indians having been successfully expelled without any loss (Fenton’s people lost all their buildings but those still standing today belong primarily toFavorite Fenton’s descendants)). This event inaugurated what would become known as “The Great Fire Of Ansonia” which affected much or all of downtown including homes along Main Street up until 1861 when it was finally extinguished using dynamite Courtesy Dr . What followed was more than just an act of arson; rather than allow East Side residents accessible farmland they had invested years into developing into their city center - thanks largely to prior investments made by Captain Amos Eaton - these mostly small proprietors fought back violently with cannons and hand grenades throughout November 1824 leading many people within minutes across business streets surrounding Tryon Mansion before surrendering themselves unconditionally once they realized how serious things were becoming; even then there were several attempts over ensuing months culminating in February 25th 1830 execution style homicides committed throughout newly created Howard Stake opposite Tryon Mansion during Boston Tea Party Micawber Massacre? Ansonia, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 8,257 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in Hartford County. In 1837, Ansonia's first settler Isaac Briggs founded a log cabin on the east side of the Connecticut River and named it Ansonia after his father-in-law, Nathaniel Anson. The community grew rapidly and by 1844 had a post office, schoolhouse, and refinery. In 1868, Briggs donated land to become what is now University Parkland State Park. The town was incorporated on July 1, 1872. Its name comes from John Hennepin's naturalization papers (dated August 12), which spelled "honestam," which means "honest man." Hennepin had come to America as an indentured servant in 1796 and became one of the earliest white settlers in what would eventually be called Hartford County. He started out as an agricultural laborer but changed his mind about life in North America when he saw opportunity for himself hereabouts. Eventually he became one of the most successful merchants and speculators in town before dying at age 85 years old in 1916 while still living thereabouts. In 1924 Ansonia erected its first high school building on Main Street; that same year also saw its founding of its first professional sports team: the Red Sox (later renamed Boston Red Sox). The city has since built two more high schools - Oneonta High School opened 1959 and New Britain High School opened 1966 - as well as several other buildings including a library and center for economic development within Town Hall Plaza . Ansonia has long been home to many businesses such as Sears Holdings Corporation who moved their headquarters there from Hoffman Estates , Illinois backfired with tizzy prices and low occupancy rates only last year causing them to leave again this past spring finally ending up relocating back to Hoffman Estates
