Ansonia is a town in eastern Connecticut. It is the seat of Ansonia Township, which has a population of 7,985 as of the 2010 census. The town is located on the southern edge of the Unitarian Universalist Association's (UUA) Western New England Conference (WNE), and borders Waterbury to its east and Westchester County to its west. The first permanent settler in what would become Ansonia was Nicholas Higginson in 1768. He named his land for his English ancestor, Asaph Higginson, who had come to America in 1623. The early residents were farmers with some sheep, pigs, and hogs running their businesses. By 1834 Ansonia had a Post Office and two churches—one Congregational and one Anglican—along with a schoolhouse and three stores. A railroad arrived in 1854; by 1860 it had connected all of southeastern Connecticut with Hartford via an rail line running through Ansonia Station. In 1862 John Fenton bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of woods east of downtown from local resident Timothy Lyon for $5; he built what became known as Fenton's Hollow Glenwood Cemetery there. In 1865–66 he laid out streets within the town limits based on routes followed by stagecoaches en route between Hartford and Boston; these streets are still present today: Main Street to the north, State Street to the south, Church Street to the east, Vinegar Hill Road to the west

Ansonia, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. The name Ansonia comes from English explorer John Anson's 1769 voyage through the area and his 1802 map of the same name. The town was platted in 1798 by Colonel George Washington and Captain James Cook as part of a grant to Joshua Sloat. It became part of Hartford County on February 26, 1815. The first store in Ansonia was built on Prospect Street in 1820 by John Davenport Andrus and brothers Isaac and Ebenezer Andrus. A millinery shop opened on Northampton Street in 1830 by Mrs. Phebe Morse; it closed about 1850. In 1835-36, General Solomon Northup burned most of Hartford but spared Ansonia because he thought its architecture would be unique among the destroyed communities (the town has since been rebuilt). A new brick courthouse was erected in 1840–41 by local man Peleg Meadowlarker; it is still used today for civil court hearings and other legal purposes. After years of economic decline due to falling industry, manufacturing and immigration during the Great Depression, Ansonia began to grow rapidly with new businesses opening up during World War II as veterans relocated to the area to work in defense industries such as aviation or shipbuilding; however, this period too ended with the war's end when many factories were left idle after V-E Day. In 1948, Ansonia became an unincorporated community under state jurisdiction before becoming an incorporated village again following passage of a state law that eliminated all general villages withinHartford County except for those created pursuant to § 11-a of the Municipal Code (the incorporation date for Ansonia is unknown). The post office closed in 1951; however, there have been occasional reports dating back to at least 1907 that mail continues being delivered via horseback from downtown into Ansonia from rural addresses east of Centre Road/US 20 until recently when USPS discontinued this service effective September 1st 2017 . AnsonIA also had their own radio station WOWK which aired from 1951-1991
