Gun lights have a long and varied history in Ansonia, Connecticut. The early Municipal Officers' pistols were equipped with two white light sources placed on the barrel of the gun to warn officers of contraband or other dangers. The first electric guns were introduced in 1892 by Dr. George Westinghouse and his American Electric Company. These guns used three small batteries to power an electric motor that created a gentle light beam that could be seen at a range of 100 yards. In 1907, the Ansonia Rifle Club began using electric guns to shoot rifles at distances up to 150 yards. This was the first time rifle shooting had been allowed in Ansonia since it was banned in 1836. In 1912, Mayor James Whelan authorized the construction of a $10,000 public building for the use of the townspeople and their firearms. This new building became known as The National Armory and was home to both police departments and local gun clubs from then until it closed its doors in 1978. Ansonia, Connecticut is a small town located in the state of Connecticut. The population was 5,471 as of the 2010 census. The town is part of Ansonia-Rochester Hills, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is bordered by West Hartford to the east and north, Bridgeport to the west and south, and Southbury to the southeast. The first residents of Ansonia were people who had moved from New England during the English Civil War. These early settlers came from Middlesex County in Massachusetts. They founded a trading post on what is now Main Street in 1664. A school was also founded at this time, but it closed around 1800 because of lack of funds. The first real development in Ansonia occurred after 1814 when John Snyder built a gristmill on Beech Street. This mill was one of several that took off during this period due to improved transportation links and an increased demand for flour throughout North America. By 1850, there were over 30 mills operating in Ansonia; however, only 6 remain today! In 1868, Captain Joshua Worthy donated land to build a public square on what is now State Street near his house (now known as Worthy Square). This square became an important focal point for society and commerce in Ansonia until well into the 20th century. During World War II, bomb damage caused by Allied bombers destroyed many buildings within town including Mrs.(M)an's Store which served as a power station for lights and heating needs until 1959; then becoming an antique store before closing down again in 2009 following numerous fires over its years-making it one of longest running businesses in town .
