Ansonia is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous town in Ansonia and one of the five towns that make up the Ansonia–West Hartford–Havens City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Ansonia, Connecticut is a small town in the state of Connecticut. It is located in Ansonia, Rensselaer County. The population was 8,759 at the 2010 census. The town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1 km²). The first settlers to Ansonia were farmers who started arriving in 1814. By 1830, the community had a post office and two stores. By 1840, there were 10 businesses in the community and 100 residents. In 1847, the first school was opened in Ansonia by Reverend John Greenfield and his son Edwin Greenfield Sr., with funding from New England Female Seminary trustees. A new school building was completed in 1853 and retains its original design today. In 1865, an electric streetlight replaced an oil light on Main Street as part of municipal improvements funded by Andrew Mellon's Reconstruction Finance Corporation. At that time, Ansonia had one grocery store and six residences with electricity available for lighting purposes only through 7 pm to 6 am during summer months when no other lights were working due to thunderstorms or outages caused by lightning strikes; these restrictions continued until 1952 when all electric services were eliminated except during special emergencies such as floods or fires A post office called "Ansonia" was established here on October 11, 1850 by Nathaniel Brownell Jr., with Samuel Fenton serving as receiver It remained open until May 1st 1870 when it closed due to lack of mail traffic On November 3rd 1860 John Purdy became owner of "The Poste Restante" which served as both a general store and post office When he died suddenly on January 4th 1861 his widow assumed ownership and operated it until her death on October 25th 1863 . It then passed hands among several people before being sold to Elias Waldron on February 14th 1865 for $2 per month .. On March 5th 1865 Mrs Waldron reopened the store under new management which included Isaac Cushing who had been running it since April 1st 1865 This store till Became known as "The People's Store" after Elijah Cushing purchased it from Mrs Waldron on July 24TH 1876 For $10 per year This business Continued operation untill It Was Sold To Charles Hennady On December 16TH 1879 He Also Bought It From Mr Hennady And Operated IT Until His Death In 1929 On April 30th 1930 The Store Became Known As "Hennady's." After His Death It Became Know As Ansonia State Bank & Post Office

Ansonia, Connecticut is a town in northern Connecticut. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Wethersfield–Bridgeport metropolitan area. The name "Ansonia" was derived from Ansoniacus, an early white settler in what is now Ansonia. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1664 when Samuel Pepys and his brother John landed on Long Island ("New England") with their ship "Dunsford". They were followed by other English traders and missionaries over the next few years. In 1668, Ansonia's first known Indian victim was killed by Nathaniel Weymouth and three others as they hunted near present-day Derby. In 1675, English explorer Captains John Smith and George Monck discovered New Canaan Valley while exploring Route 66 between Hartford and New Haven; this led to the naming of that valley after them both. By 1701, most of the territory now comprising Ansonia had been claimed by Connecticut. The town itself may have been founded as early as 1712 when Ebenezer Goodrich purchased land east of modern-day Watertown from Captain Thomas Higginson for £2 per acre (about $40 per square mile). Goodrich built a house there which still stands today - Goodrich House Museum - and conducted some of the earliest farming operations in what would become Ansonia. His son Amos Goodrich served as one of two town commissioners during much of colonial America's initial growth period; he also helped to create our current town hall building (1786) and cemetery (1856). Amos Goodrich's grandson Julius Wirthman also played an important role in early Ansonian history: he served as Mayoralty Editor for both 1869-70 & 1871-72; he also wrote extensively about local politics for various publications including "The people", "The Courant", "Review Register", "Plymouth Gazette" & various local newspapers throughout his life; finally he became General Manager at CT State Paper Co., Inc., located here until its closure in 1984. AnSONIA'S IMPACT ON CURRENT COMMUNITY LIFE By MARK AVERY Many people know little about what happened before they were born into this community or even after they left it behind over 50 years ago on Long Island Sound! People who live here today only know about us because we are mentioned once or twice on some website or another – pretty much everyone who knows anything has heard mention of Bridgeport somewhere along side us... But nobody really knows all that happened back then – until now! In fact, if you could go back to any time period you wanted and just ask anyone around here where Bridgeport used to be – almost everyone would remember! So lets take a look at how things started out for those who lived here during Colonial times... Greetings from long ago! As far back as anyone can remember there actually was a thriving community called Anonia on Long Island Sound… but it didn’t start happening until AFTER THE FIRST WHITE SETTLERS ARRIVED HERE IN 1664!!! This isn’t just something we locals like to brag about though – every person who lives within shouting distance of either Bridgeport or Wellesleyville knows this story too!! Even though many people may not realize it yet – ANSONIA WAS ONE OF THE FIRST LOCATIONS TO BE POPulated IN CONNECTICUT UNDER THE NEW ENGLAND COLONIAL SYSTEM!! WAY BACK BEFORE ANYONE EVEN REALIZED THAT AMERICA WAS EVER FORMALLY BORN!!!!! Anyway – BACK TO OUR STORY…. After Samuel Pepys & John Dunstable landed on Long Island off Of Newtown Creek with their ship “Dunsford” several guys set up shop right next door to each other downriver from where we currently stand….. These men were friends with some white dudes living downriver so all eyes were squarely upon these new arrivals 🙂 And soon enough….. more white folks started coming thru here too…………..sorta like when your parents move out West again for good finally!!!!!! One thing led to another & within 3 short years ANSONIA WAS DEVELOPING AS A STRONGER PLACE THAN WHERE WE ARE NOW TODAY…… SO MUCH FOR THAT FALSE CLAIM THAT WE LOST ALL OF OUR INDUSTRY WHEN MULTIPLE CHOICE COAL FUElled THE GREATEST ECONOMIC CRISIS IN AMERICAN HISTORY!!!!! Instead tho….. ANSONIA CONTINUED TO EARN ITS RANK AS ONE OF THE MAINST BUSINESSES AND POLLUTION FREE COMMUNITIES BETWEEN LONG ISLAND AND BRIDGEPORT FROM ABOUT 1700 TO 1800!!! WHAT A GERMANY BORDER CRUSADE THIS WAS FOR US CITIZENS!!!!!!!!!!!!! JUST LOOK AT LONG ISLAND TODAY & CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING Germanigent??? Ansonia, Connecticut was first settled by English colonists in 1614. The town was named after the Ansonia River, which empties into the Long Island Sound. The first settler in Ansonia was John Morse. By 1800, the town had a population of over 1000 people. In 1875, Ansonia became a city and it has since grown to be one of the largest cities in New England with a population of over 25,000 people.
