Ansonia, Connecticut was founded in 1786 by the Ansoniaitans as a small town on the border of Hartford County and Waterbury County. It grew quickly,becoming one of the most important towns in early Connecticut. The first gun store was opened in 1811 and soon after, Gunsmith John Ball opened his second store which became known as "The Ball Store." In 1824, Ansonia had its own post office and began to grow rapidly with new development such as a school and two hospitals. By 1830, Ansonia had over 1,000 residents and a population of 5 churches. A large fire destroyed much of the town in 1834 but it rebuilt soon after with more shops and housing. The town continued to grow until 1861 when it merged into Hartford County.

According to the 2000 U.S Census, Ansonia had a population of 362 people living in 100 households out of total population of 1,007 people; this decrease from 467 (2000) to 362 (−3%) during the 1990s due to an increase in housing prices and an accompanying loss of jobs that left residents with less money for groceries or other basic needs. In 2002-2003 there was also an increase in crime rates which negatively impacted economic stability as families became more stressed and turned to crime for income distribution; however since then crime rates have decreased overall which may be due to new police officers being hired and more attention being given to public safety issues such as drugs and gangs on Main Street In 2006 Mayor Joe Lupica announced plans for construction of a new high school when funding became available through state appropriations that increased by $5 million over 5 years from 2007–2013 inclusive A daycare center has been open since September 2009 on Union Street next door to Stonington Elementary School called "Baby Lock" which served pre-school children until kindergarten while their parents attended work or came home early. Ansonia is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ansonia-Monroe-West Hartford, Connecticut Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by English settlers in 1635 and was named for Samuel Anson, 1st Viscount Saybrook. The name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "place of ambush." In 1795, Ansonia became the home of Yale University's School of Medicine after it moved from New Haven to Old Saybrook Manor on the north side of town. The school continued to exist until 1869 when it merged with other Yale Schools to become Yale–New Haven College. In 1875, the First National Bank opened in Ansonia and remains an active bank today. In 1907, General Electric established its headquarters here and continues to operate there today as GEICO. In 1914, Eastern State (later known as KeyBank) began operations in Ansonia as a savings bank and has since grown into one of America's leading financial institutions. In 1944, Radio Corporation Of America (RCA) founded an experimental broadcasting station called WBXH-TV here which helped lead to American entry into World War II; WBXH still operates today as a PBS affiliate within the town limits.Following World War II, Ansonia grew rapidly thanks in part to its status as an industrial center for Connecticut’s defense industry; this growth halted however around 1970 due to low unemployment rates among white collar workers during wartime years compared with recent decades when jobs have been plentiful across eastern Connecticut but wages have not kept up with inflation rates.).Ansonia experienced another period of rapid growth beginning in the late 1990s through 2000s based largely on high concentrations of foreign investors who financed much new construction throughout northeastern Connecticut while economic indicators (such as joblessness rates) stayed stable or improved outside of towns such as Bridgeport where development has resumed faster than in neighboring communities despite slower wage growth). However explosive growth stopped abruptly around 2006 following several bankruptcies among developers and increased competition from states such as Rhode Island which had seen similar levels of investment but lower joblessness rates during that time frame
