Ansonia is a town in the town of Ansonia, Connecticut. The population was 1,641 at the 2010 census. It is located on the West River and has a total area of . The first Europeans to visit Ansonia were Dutch traders in 1624-25. They named it New Amsterdam after their new colony in that year. Arapaho Indian Chief sachem Keokuk also visited Ansonia in 1627, and he left behind an inscription which still stands outside the courthouse: "In memory of my brother, who died here some time ago." In 1764, Ethan Allen built a cabin here while travelling through this area with his army during the American Revolution. He named his settlement Green Mountain because nearby peaks looked green from where he had seen them from his campfire. A post office was established at Ansonia in 1803, and remained operational until it was discontinued in 1906. A store was opened here by Joshua Goudreau in 1814 and became one of the first businesses to open in what would become Ansonia. At that time, there were only about twenty people living here. One of its early entrepreneurs was Joel Palmer who started selling groceries from a wagon brought into town by horseback from Stamford on Long Island Sound for $1 per month when services such as this weren't available elsewhere on Long Island at that time. In 1869–70, Palmer organized an effort to bring electricity to towns throughout Connecticut using direct current (DC) wires laid down along riverbanks; this led to increased commerce and growth for Ansonia over the next few years as other communities began adopting similar electric technologies. During World War II, much activity took place within Ansonia due to its strategic location close to both major centres of military production – Hartford (north) and Bridgeport (south). This included hundreds of workers building radar equipment for USAAF bombers based out of Fairfield County Airport; many others constructing barracks for naval forces operating off Long Island Sound; as well as manufacturing items such as munitions and supplies for our troops overseas including parts for B-17s used during Operation Overlord; finally many residents working on various government projects like creating roads or developing hydroelectric power facilities near downtown Hartford or farther inland near Ledyard & Tolland State Highways 11 & 12 respectively - all while enjoying handsomely paid salaries provided by our war industry partners! postwar growth prompted even more development with several high-rise buildings being erected around downtown over recent years including one just completed atop an old mill complex dating back to 18th century times! Despite these recent efforts howevermuch progress has been made since then alas…..the community is facing major challenges including gentrification/residency pressures likely resulting from increasing commercialization/commercialism rather than reinvestment or support from local elected officials
