Ansonia, Connecticut is a small town in the Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 8,569. The town is located on the southern edge of Fairfield County and is bordered by the towns of East Hartford to the east and West Hartford to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Ansonia has a total area of only 0.8 square miles (2 km²), all land. The first people in what is now Ansonia were Native Americans who lived on Long Island Sound before migrating upriver to what is now Fairfield County in 1636. They built their homes along Little River which flows through Ansonia and still forms its boundary today with some farmlands on either side of it. The first white settlers arrived around 1800 when they came from Derby, Connecticut as part of a group led by Captain John Smith who was looking for a site for a new capital City of America. When they reached Hartford they found that there already had been settlements here and so they concluded that this would be an ideal place for their new capital city but instead they founded Providence which quickly became known as "The Metropolis." When Captain John Smith died in 1715 his group decided to move their capital back to Boston but after some time decided that this would not work because there was no water available close by so they moved again to what is now Ansonia where they founded their own village called Prospect Park. After several years more than just prospecting these men managed to find enough waterlogged land near present day Ansonia Falls to build a dam which provided them with water even though at that time it was very difficult indeed to obtain any kind of irrigation system other than canals dug deep into hillocksides where rainwater pooled untilmud fell upon it and eventually emptied into streams providing power for mills run by Indians or European entrepreneurs during this period also known as "the Pequot War." One consequence of having such great access to water supply was that beginning about 1810 farmers began growing maize (corn) rather than wheat which then became one of the most important crops in New England due largelyto its high yields compared with other types of food grown at this time such as beans, peas, potatoes etc.. maize soon became so important that Plymouth Church started offering classes in cornhusk weaving (a typeof weaving using leaves from cornstalks) starting about 1820 specifically catering towards merchants living near Boston proper who wished both Learn how To weave cloth For export or purchase purposes! As early as 1825 Lord Stamford had obtained 2 steamboats capable Of traveling Up And Downondriver To Carry Coal From mines In This Town & Connect With Canal Which ran throghout This Country Although still under construction!
