Windsor is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. Windsor is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. It lies on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Aspen to the north and east, Durango to the south, Pueblo to the west, andsummer towns of Telluride and Arapahoe to the northwest. The first people to arrive in what is now Windsor were Native Americans who hunted game near present-day Aspen Creek. They named their settlement after King George III of Great Britain because he had granted them land in that area in 1786. The first store opened in 1868 and post office was established in 1870. In 1902, a railroad line was extended through Windsor from Trinidad to Greeley with its first station located just east of town center on US Highway 6 (now called US Highway 16). At this time, Windsor became an important stop for travelers on both national highways as it lay adjacent to both sides of one major artery. In 1907, a group of local farmers organized themselves into a farm cooperative known as The Lions Club which grew into one of America's leading agricultural societies before disbanding in 1966 due to lack of support from other members. In 1978–79, firefighters fought a massive fire that destroyed nearly all but two buildings within town limits; all residents were evacuated except for a few hundred people who managed to return home later that night despite heavy smoke inhalation hazards posed by flames dancing across skyward from numerous buildings still standing.. The community rallied around local businesses which closed early during restoration efforts which lasted until early morning on October 15th 1979 when all fires were put out without loss or damage beyond some minor damage caused by extreme heat/smoke inhalation hazards among thousands upon thousands more citizens assembled along Interstate 25 en route back home only minutes removed from seeing some structures burn completely while others sustained only minor fire damage; most importantly many individual citizens stepped up and offered Unlimited volunteer hours immediately thereafter throughout day long air quality monitoring operations being conducted at various locations including our own regional hospital where critically ill patients awaited treatment while those injured received immediate attention .. vernon c’est la vie

During the war years, Windsor saw significant growth as soldiers and their families moved into the town from all across Colorado. By 1945, Windsor had reached its current population size with over 1,500 residents.
