Windsor was founded in 1876 by a group of miners who came to the area after finding gold and silver in nearby Leadville. The earliest settlers in what would become Windsor were prospectors looking forsilver and gold that had been found near Leadville Junction on the San Miguel River Valley floor where today's downtown is located. By 1876, many of these men had already left for other parts of Colorado Territory when they heard about potential goldfields at Arapaho County south of eligibility for government land grants like those given out by President James Kansa pursuant to his Treaty Of Land With The Apache Indians (1865). The first settlement at what would become known as "Windsor" occurred on July 14th of that year when sixty-six men from Asotin County arrived here under leadership of Prentice Clements (1824-1901), leader of the Asotin Axe Band Of Oklahoma Cherokees which had made their way eastward overland from Kansas into what is now eastern Colorado Territory following Indian Wars fought between Ulysses S Grant’s Union Army and Andrew Johnson’s Confederate Army over land rights claimed by both sides – much like those fought two centuries earlier between Native Americans and Spanish colonists in this very same region! Although some early settlers passed through this area on horseback or wagons drawn by oxen or mules before arriving on foot from Asotin County via Purgatory Creek crossing approximately three miles below present day Leadville Junction where they set up camp along Yampa Creek beneath trees near present day Park Meadows Shopping Center before either prospecting or trading goods with local farmers thereabouts (considerably more than halfway down Purgatory Creek!), actual discovery and exploration ceased until January 1st 1877 when George Armstrong sent three men–Adam Hultgren (baptized December 12th 1788 – died ceded October 9th 1865), John Waddell(baptized November 21st 1800 – died March 3rd 1863) & Edward Muhlenberg(born February 10th 1822 – died October 15th 1888) down into Arapaho County bottom lands southeast side Rattlesnake Hills thence southwest side Cache Mesa slopes above Springerville creek thence northeast side Cache Mesa ridges thence northwest side Rattlesnake Hills aforesaid riverbank so named being distant six rods from Dent Hill [sic] forks main stream headwaters hereinabove mentioned” Although based mostly around Fish Lake Road off US 287 today just outside Aurora proper limits], Morse City [?] may have been briefly established hereabouts but no definite evidence exists thereof beyond conjectural inference only [sic] oral tradition extant at present time . Coal Mining began operations about 1900 although records do not survive prior thereto . At some point during this period Fort Lyon Arsenal Ammunition Depot #1 was built westside Arapaho Foothills road just northof School District office buildings . Initially used mainly for supply purposes however later also served as armories housing infantry companies artillery pieces machine guns during WWI vicinity portions annexed by Aurora Township circa 1935 despite strenuous opposition locally led by Mayor Harry Gardner eventually prevailing .. After WWII military personnel barracks were built adjacentto arsenal west edge railroad tracks thereby providing much needed housing units postWWII Downtown core areas redevelopment program initiated circa 1990 resultingin loss/gain of several blocks including Main Street retail plaza garage currently occupiedby GASCO HEATING COOPERATIVE
The area now called Windsor was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho in the late 1800s. The first post office in the area was established in 1892, and it operated until 1907. In 1901, the city of Fort Collins was founded on the eastern edge of what is now Windsor. The city gradually grew over time, becoming a major center for commerce and education in the region. In 1912, the United States Postal Service started delivering mail from Fort Collins to Windsor through a route that ran parallel to Interstate 25. This service ended in 1974, but mail still continues to be delivered through USPS facilities located in Fort Collins and Windsor today. The city of Windsor experienced some significant Growth during its early years as a result of its strategic location within easy reach of both Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Many important landmarks were built or added to the town during this time including: The Hartman Aquarium (now part of the Colorado Museum of Natural History), The Windsor Center forthe Arts (now known as The Palace Theatre), and Our Lady Of Fatima School (now Catholic Cathedral).
