The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad arrived in town and soon started construction on a line to Denver. In order to provide security for workers traveling betweenDenver and the local mines, the company constructed a series of stockades around town. These fences were mostly destroyed by miners over time, but a few remain today as evidence of Burlington Northern's gun control measures. The first mine explosion in Rocky Ford occurred on October 4, 1886. This event led to increased regulation of mining companies and made it more difficult for them to negligently store explosives near populated areas. The following year saw the installation of a gas-fired power plant in town which made it possible for Burlington Northern to begin exporting coal (and other minerals) directly from Rocky Ford. This development allowed the company to build up an extensive arsenal within town and began fortifying its buildings with guns. In 1895, two gunmen ambushed several sheriff's deputies while they were patrolling Windsor Terrace neighborhood late one night. He also founded Windsor Elementary School (now Windsor Middle School) in 1915. The school has been in operation since then and remains one of the most important institutions in town today. From 1925 until its closing during World War II, Windsor High School functioned as an all-girls school before becoming coeducational starting in 1951). After years of growth and progressivity over several decades – culminating with an increase in enrollment to 2,986 students when they opened their doors for enrolling freshmen during fall 2007 – Community College Northridge opened its doors on July 1st within walking distance (and just across the street from First District Court) making Windsor once again accessible to those who can't attend nearby universities or larger colleges like Colorado State University or Rocky Mountain University within driving range!
