The town of Windsor was founded in 1869 by brothers John and David Windsor. The first store in the town opened on Main Street. In 1886, the city of Denver incorporated as a municipality, and Windsor became a part of it. The population of Windsor increased rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and development began in earnest. In 1912, the old Post Office building was replaced by a new one, which served as the town's commercial center until 1954. Over time, other businesses were added to the mix: The First National Bank (1925), Drury’s Drug Store (1929), The Lion’s Den pub (1930), and finally Sears & Roebuck (1974). In 1976, Windsor celebrated its centennial anniversary with a parade and celebration at City Hall. In that year also came construction of a new courthouse on State Street; this structure served as the town's primary courthouse until 1983 when it was replaced by the current facility on Broadway Court. Since 1971, Windsor has been home to two annual festivals: The Contraband Fair (held every summer) and Arts Alive! (held every fall).
