Windsor, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Windsor is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is bordered by Asotin to the north, Fort Collins to the east, Arvada to the south, and Pueblo to the west. The first people who settled in what is now Windsor arrived around 1859. They were farmers who grew corn and wheat. The first post office was established in 1862. Many of the early residents came from New York City or other parts of northeastern United States because this was where railroads were being built. In 1881, a school district was created and Windsor became part of it. In 1954, Windsor incorporated as a city. It has since grown rapidly due to its location and infrastructure improvements made during recent decades such as: an expressway servicing both rural areas within its borders as well as downtown; new housing developments including several high-rise structures; a large shopping mall which opened in 2007; and increased tourism attractions such as golf tournaments which have helped drive economic growth over the years. The name “Windsor” comes from two local rivers: Big Beaver Creek (originally called Deer Creek) which flows through town into river North Platte downstream from peak Elk Mountain ski resort; Little Beaver Creek flowing parallel but much smaller towards Asotin village before joining Big Beaver Creek just upstream from town limits whence most settlers took their water supplies for irrigation purposes only occasionally using it for drinking purposes – although many locals still refer to all three creeks collectively (and use “Windsor” more generally when referring specifically here).
