Windsor, Colorado is a small town located in Routt County, Colorado. The population was 1,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the National Sawmill Museum district. Windsor was founded in 1875 by Jerald and Eloise Windsor. The first mine in Windsor opened in 1876 and produced coal. By 1915, the mine had closed but the town continued to grow because of its location near the now defunct Genesee & Wyoming Railroad. At its peak, Windsor had a population of 2,500 people and it served as an agricultural center for surrounding rural areas. In 1958, Windsor became an incorporated municipality and its mayor was John Hargrave. The community has since experienced some growth and decline since then; however, it remains a significant cultural center within its borders. In recent years, Windsor has seen increasing development due to its location on Interstate 25 close to nearby Durango and Glenwood Springs. This has led to increased traffic congestion as well as changes in character due to new businesses opening up along I-25 such as Applebees and Dunkin’ Donuts which have drawn attention from tourists and locals alike. Despite these challenges, though, many residents continue to identify with their hometown while enjoying all that it has to offer including beautiful scenery around every bend

Windsor, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Windsor is located just east of the Animas River and west of Highway 66. The first settlers in Windsor were Presbyterian missionaries who arrived in 1875. The town was founded on the site of what is now known as Silverthorne. In 1903, Windsor became a municipally-owned shopping mall when it was incorporated as a village. In 1999, Windsor voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government with its own police department and budgeting authority. The city grew rapidly during the late 1990s and 2000s due to population growth within the surrounding rural area, construction of new businesses and housing developments around the mall, and increased access to transportation through nearby Interstate 25. By 2007, Windsor had become one of Rocky Mountain County's fastest-growing settlements with over 2 million residents living in unincorporated areas adjacent to the city limits
The first Europeans to set foot on the site of Windsor, Colorado were English fur traders in the mid-19th century. The area was first explored by Kit Carson and his comrades in 1824, when they traveled up the Animas River. They named their new settlement Fort Clearwater after Creeks that they thought might be living near the fort. The fort was built in 1827, but it only lasted a year because of a series of accidents. In 1830, an American army invaded Mexico and discovered gold nearby; this led to American presence on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. By 1833, Americans had established two settlements at present-day Windsor and Golden (later Pueblo) due to this discovery. In 1836, General James Haggerty founded what is now Fort Haggerty east of Trinidad along the old Santa Fe Trail; he named it for General Harker’s half brother, Colonel John C. Haggerty Sr., who had been with him during his victories over Apache Indians in New Mexico earlier that year. After several years of construction, Fort Haggerty opened its doors on November 25, 1840. It served as a stopover for travelers on their way north to Kansas Territory or south to Los Angeles County through what is now Arizona and Nevada; it also acted as a supply depot for British forces stationed in California during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1865, Congress passed legislation establishing Denver City Limits; these boundaries included parts of present-day Windsor and Golden County. On July 1st of that year, city officials reported that population growth within city limits had caused difficulty meeting infrastructure needs such as water supplies and sewers – which necessitated annexing parts of neighboring townships into Denver City Limits so that everyone could have access to potable water resources and sewer systems. This action helped solidify Denver’s place as one of America’s largest cities by 1870. Waterloo's incorporation into Denver followed in 1903
