The city was platted on March 21, 1909 by David Laughlin with J D Beattie as the engineer for its construction. The first building erected in wheatridge was a store which served as both town hall and hotel until 1924 when it burned down. In 1915 a dam was constructed to supply water for wheat ridge which increased production of irrigation crops such as corn, soybean and cotton; however this caused environmental problems that continue to this day including floods that have ruined many homes near the riverbank. After World War II there were large-scale agriculture changes throughout American society which began to take hold within Weld County due to advances made within chemical engineering during that time period; Wheat Ridge became an important center for these changes thanks to its location on I-25 between Denver and Colorado Springs making it easily accessible by truck or car transporting goods across wide expanses of rural America while also providing employment opportunities for local residents over time culminating with full incorporation into the larger community following prohibition of alcohol within Weld County effective January 1st of 1945 (the same year that wheat ridge experienced its most destructive flood ever).
