Under Lawry's management, Wheat Ridge developed into one of America's leading grainproducing communities – a status that continued until 1988 when deregulation of agriculture led to decreased production and increased prices for most commodities worldwide. As a result, many businesses closed down or relocated outside Wheat Ridge during the late 1990s recession; however, some businesses have returned since then including several restaurants which anchor Main Street between Interstate 25 and I-70/ 8th Avenue NE. Today, Wheat Ridge is known for its diverse cultural attractions such as its annual Soap Festival (a sellout event), art exhibits at The Arts Center & Museum District (the largest shopping mall in northwest Colorado), rodeos every fall at nearby Arapaho Downs Racetrack and snowmobiling during winter months around downtown core areas including Veterans Park Golf Course and Crystal Springs Resort area adjacent to I-25 exit 81A).

After some years they moved their farm to what is now the heart of Wheat Ridge, near Deadwood Road and Brighton Avenue. In 1871, John C. wheat organized a company with other farmers to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) in present day Weld County for $5 per acre ($100 per hectare). This land included what is now downtown Wheat Ridge as well as parts of Broomfield and Arvada to the south and east respectively In 1876, when new county laws allowed townships to be formed within counties, wheat ridge incorporated as a village under a law passed by the state legislature that same year In 1912, when Weld County merged into Colorado , wheat ridge became part of the newly formed city of Wheatridge . The population reached 30,000 by 1970 . By 2000 it had shrunken again to 26,925 people making it one of Colorados smallest cities . However much like most communities across Colorado , there are periodic efforts made to keep wheat ridge alive including an effort by citizens group called " Citizens for Community Development" which has spent more than $1 million over 10 years promoting villagehood status for wheat ridge
