Wheat Ridge, Colorado is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wheat Ridge is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and bordered by Routt and Park counties to the south and east, Aspen to the north, Arapahoe County to the west, and Jefferson County to the northwest. The first white people in what is now Weld County arrived in 1869 when they were driven out of Apache Junction by Native Americans. They named their new settlement "Wheat Ridge" after a mountain range that they found while travelling through this area. The town grew rapidly during the early years of its existence because there was a large demand for wheat crops exported to other parts of America. Wheat Ridge became an important center for agricultural production because it had a good water supply, ample land available for farming, and good transportation links. In 1951, Wheat Ridge became one of seventeen cities in Colorado Springs metropolitan area when that area was created from all of Weld County. During World War II, Wheat Ridge played an important role as an airfield serving both Bomber Command and Fighter Group 1 (the "Wild Weasels") which operated from nearby Aspen Air Force Base during aerial combat operations over Europe in 1944-45. After hostilities ceased, many local businesses closed due to lack of business opportunities following peaceably ending hostilities; however some continued operation until around 1990 as post-war reconstruction began in earnest throughout western USA In recent years much progress has been made with regards to renewable energy development with new wind turbines being erected just outside town limits; although more work needs to be done with regard to maintaining infrastructure adequate for such developments which are often times quite noisy inside small towns like Wheat Ridge!

The settlement grew quickly due to its location along the Santa Fe Trail and its access to irrigation water from the Animas River. In 1886, George Armstrong Custer was killed in action near wheat ridge while on his way to Battle of Little Bighorn. This event has helped define Wheat Ridge as a military town.
