Wheat Ridge is a small town in the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area. The population was 23,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Arapahoe County, Colorado, and it lies on Interstate 25 about 20 miles (32 km) southeast of downtown Denver. Wheat Ridge was founded in 1894 by Presbyterian missionaries as a farmstead on a hill above the present day intersection of I-25 and U.S. Highway 64. The first settlers were James Irvine and his wife Anna Woodruff Irvine; their son John Irvine built the first home there in 1894, and their daughter Laura born in 1895 became one of Wheat Ridge's most prominent citizens. In 1903, wheat farmers Hiram Heard and Wm Jarrell started marketing crops to other areas across Colorado with what they called "the new system". This system used combines toharvest clean wheat berries that had not been stowed away for later planting season; this saved time and energy during winter months when conventional farming methods were used. In 1907, when Interstate 25 was extended eastward from its current terminus at Lakewood Boulevard through Aurora into Weld County, Wheat Ridge became an important interchange; it still is today one of only two interchanges west of downtown Denver open to traffic on I-25 (the other being I-70 just east of Fort Collins). In 1954, when Coloradosfontaines National Forest was created within Arapahoe County, Wheat Ridge became its easternmost outpost within that forest - until then it had been located entirely within Douglas County. That same year saw the opening of the nearby Keystone International Airport which would soon become one of North America's leading airports; however aviation would not play an important role in Wheat Ridge until after World War II when retail stores began arriving and people started commuting to work in neighboring cities such as Aurora orDenver. During this time period Wheat Ridge also experienced rapid growth due to its location near major highways – both I-25 and U.S.-64 – as well as its close proximity to educational institutions including Centenary College (now Western State University), Montrose Community College, Rocky Mountain School District No 7 & 8 (#2), Centennial Christian Academy (#3), First United Methodist Church (#4), Assemblies Of God Church #5 & 6 (#6), John Fetterman Elementary School (& Middle School) & Mrs Fetterman’s Home (later known as Cherry Creek Daycare Center) which all opened between 1949 & 1951 respectively – making it easy for people living near either highway to get around town without ever having to leave their homes! The Close Road community annexed much of what is now Stanislaus Park during this time too! These days many residents commute all day long via Interstate 25 or US-64 but even those who don't live anywhere near either highway can enjoy walking or biking trails that run through neighboring towns like Rifle Valley or Ashton Lakes! The first settler to reside in Wheat Ridge was John Prentice. He and his wife Susie Buckeye arrived from Michigan on July 25, 1879, having been driven there by the Panic of 1878. They erected a log cabin near the present site of the town square and began to cultivate maize and other crops which they grew themselves using their own labor. By 1886, wheat had become an important commodity crop in Wheat Ridge as well as nearby Aspen Junction due to its ability to grow rapidly with little need for fertilizer or other inputs. In 1916, when the incorporated municipality of Wheat Ridge was created out of portions of several rural villages within Weld County, Wheatridge became its first city limits
