The first white people to live in present-day Wheat Ridge were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1848. They started a small grocery store and corn crib on Main Street. In 1892, local entrepreneur and politician George Wickersham donated land for a new high school. The town motto was "An Ideal School for Our Ideal World". In 1916, wheat prices plummeted due to war efforts; however, by 1919 Wheat Ridge had recovered and many businesses reopened. A year later, Wheaton Township was created and Cottonwood Creek Junction became its business district south of Main Street where most of the commercial activity took place until recently when Interstate 25 divided the township into two areas:Wheaton to the north and east and Asheville to the south and west. In 1931 there were only six homes in Wheat Ridge; however by 1945 there were over 1,000 residents. One reason why Wheat Ridge has remained relatively stable during these years is because it has lacked major infrastructure projects that have caused other towns around Colorado to go through boom times like those that happened in Aurora or Centennial (CO). Wheat Ridge is a small town in southeastern Colorado, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is part of the Littleton-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to the area were farmers who came from Illinois in 1849 and built their homes on the east side of the Poudre River. A post office was established in 1850, and by 1853, wheat had been grown there for sale to traders and travelers. The first school in Wheat Ridge was opened in 1872. In 1865, local citizens erected a log cabin as a county courthouse. That same year, they also founded the Wheat Ridge Rifle Club which still meets monthly today. In 1870, a railroad was built through Wheat Ridge; it became known as the Rocky Mountain Railway (RMR). With its arrival came new businesses and residents; many of whom chose to build houses around what would become town square. By 1880, wheat production had increased so much that a flour mill had been built nearby and began producing flour for local markets. In 1886, RMR donated land for what would become Wheat Ridge Elementary School; this building still stands today and serves as one of the most iconic landmarks in town! In 1912, when Colorado became an statehood country*, Wheat Ridge voted to become its own municipality* (* adult residents only). It did so by adopting an ordinance proclaiming that “wheat has always been our chief article of commerce” In 1949 *(the year after Colorado became an State), locals decided to rename their town “Wheat Ridge” after General John Custer* (* Custer fought with General George Armstrong Custer during World War I) because they felt he deserved better than simply “Old Fort Greeley”.*(*The general's original resting place is located near Fort Lewis National Monument.) Many people feel that naming their town after someone who truly deserves recognition is something special **(not just any old person could have received such recognition). For example: Chuck Brown (founder of Brownie Bites fame) attended high school here before moving on to college **Chuck's older brother Dale attended White Sands Missile Range School here too!)
