Wheat Ridge is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge was founded in 1875 by George Withers and named for James Wheat of Pennsylvania. It was also home to the first public school in Weld County. In 1916, the town incorporated as a village and then became a city in 1959. The original homesteads were built on high ground overlooking wheat fields that were part of the Rancho El Paso Mexican land grant given to George Washington Carver by President Abraham Lincoln on February 14, 1861. The town site was surveyed by James Hancey in 1875 and purchased from wealthy rancher Cimarron Forbes by Withers and other early settlers of Weld County. The name "Wheat Ridge" had been chosen because it would resemble the ridges seen near Philadelphia during winter months when grain traders transported their cargo overland from Kansas City to Denver through what is now eastern Colorado. The first settler to arrive in Wheat Ridge was Captain Samuel Morse who purchased land between Main Street and US 191 on November 1, 1875 for $4,000 cash plus interest payable every 6 months until deed could be recorded with terms better suited for an agricultural community such as himself: "A tract of beautiful rolling country situate on high hills west side of Routt River about one mile square." Morse's purchase included some 30 Bonus trees which are still standing today providing shade on summer days while providing testimony to his innovative thinking regarding tree planting: " Bonus trees – these being small evergreen shrubs or thin logs six feet tall or more having deep root systems – grew plentifully under his guidance; they will supply all our needs hereafter." This type of mass planting technology would become commonplace throughout much of America during this time period as farmers looked to ensure they received consistent yields year-round so they could continue profitable operations even during difficult economic times within their specific region or state/province/country
