Wheat Ridge is a town in Coryell County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Wheat Ridge is located on the north side of the Arkansas River and on the east side of Routt County. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Wheat Ridge was John Haggerty in 1876. He ranched land near present day Keystone and built a log cabin which still stands today as a museum piece known as "Haggerty's Cabin". In 1886, Leland Stanford Jr., one of America's most famous entrepreneurs, founded Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. After he died in 1893, his widow donated 7 million acres (27 km²) of farmland to be held by the public for education purposes within five years or she would have received nothing. This parcel became Wheat Ridge Township under Colorado law on November 3, 1889. On October 8, 1898, it was announced that a schoolhouse had been erected at Junction Creek and named after Mrs. Leland Stanford Sr.'s late husband – "Wheat Ridge Academy". The first person to teach school here was Elisha Kirkbride who started off with 2 students and taught for 3 hours per day before moving up to 6 hours per day starting on March 4th 1903 when there were 10 students attending daily! Kansas natives Della Pinkney & her brother Wm Gentry took over teaching duties from then until 1923 when they both passed away; later that year their daughter Nettie took over and continued to teach until her retirement in 1951! Nineteen thirty two saw an addition to the schoolroom building which housed an art studio run by local artist Florence Peters who brought American Art methods back into this small school! In 1933 Mrs Roe added another room/classroom which served as an auditorium until 1984 when it closed due to arson! Eventually all classrooms were renovated/added into one large building which currently housing many different types of exhibits including: memorabilia from Nat King Cole; photos from Pioneer Days; industrial art from around Weld County; etc... Today we enjoy having our own community library called 'Wheatridge Public Library' where we offer programming throughoutthe year related to various topics like history, literature (including Shakespeare), music (including Mozart!), agriculture & science,... We also participate in many extracurricular activities such as: drama club; band; robotics club; chess club; girls soccer team...etc... Our Main Street features several shops such as Ace Hardware - operated by our wonderful Ladies Club since 1907 (& still going strong!) - JCPenney -anchored since 1909 (& now open 24/7!) - Costco -anchored since 1978 (!); Bob Evans restaurant opened its doors here back in 1976 (!); Chik-fil-A ($) situated right down Main Street opposite our library) among many others!

Wheat Ridge is the most populous city in Adams County and seventh most populous city in Colorado. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first recorded settler in Wheat Ridge was James Robertson who arrived on July 9, 1879. He named his new town after himself and his brother John (also called Jno.) wheat ridge on a high mountain near Asotin Peak in Clear Creek Valley west of Denver. The area that would become Wheat Ridge was first settled by farmers from Illinois and adjacent Missouri during the late 1800s until smallpox began wreaking havoc across the Rocky Mountains nationally capping off what had been an agricultural boom for those stateside populations living along the Front Range of the Rockies. By 1892 only 7 families lived within five miles of what would become Wheat Ridge; all were employed by ranchers grazing livestock on rolling ranchlands east and west of Aurora or Aurora Mountain near present day Castle Rock Boulevard and I-25 exit 24A/US Highway 36 interchange just past Cimarron Road intersection today's downtown Wheat Ridge Shopping Center opposite Keystone Mall off I-25 exit 27A/US Highway 36 interchange today's south side Platte River Yards arterial leading to Interstate 25 exit 28 tonight's north side Platte River Yards arterial leading to University Avenue
