Wheat Ridge is located on the Continental Divide, north of Fort Collins and east of Aspen. It has an elevation of 4,394 feet (1,500 m). The community was founded in 1876 by farmers from nearby Aspen and Loveland. It became a ski resort in the 1920s and 1930s. The first people to live in Wheat Ridge were Native Americans who hunted game near present day 46th Street and University Boulevard. A post office was established in 1872, and it remained in operation until 1959. At that time, it became a part ofDenver. In 1907, an irrigation ditch was built through wheat fields to help with crop production; this led to increased demand for water from residents in Denver so that a new waterworks facility could be built just north of where Wheat Ridge now stands. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed a dam across Wiggles Creek in 1935 which helped fuel growth in Wheat Ridge during World War II; today’s reservoir forms much of what is left of that project. In 1957, Wheat Ridge merged with nearby Aurora to form one communitywide government under Mayor John Hickenlooper’s leadership; since then, local government has grown more complex as Aurora annexed other municipalities including Thornton on its north side and Centennial Heights on its southeast corner before amalgamating with neighbouring Northglenn back into Aurora again in 2013. Today’s municipal structure reflects these changes: Wheat Ridge City Council members are elected at-large while Aurora has two mayoralties - one covering all within city boundaries while another encompasses any municipality annexed by Aurora since 2007 – making it both administratively dense but also highly responsive to citizens’ needs as well as ensuring tightly integrated public services across multiple jurisdictions.
