They had two children: Vernon White (1907-1983) and Shirley Jane White (born 1912). In 1916, when Colorado became an independent state, wheat farming began to be developed as a commodity crop hereabouts with some acreage leased from neighboring states such as Wyoming Territory for this purpose. Some early investors were John Leland, J.B. Beardsley, Wm Husted and Cornelius Vanderbilt Prentice who each started up several thousand acres of wheat production which grew rapidly during World War I due to increased demand from munitions makers all around the world during that war periodcliffe . The peak years for wheat production were 1921-24 with over 60,000 metric tons exported from Wheat Ridge alone; but thereafter yields slowly declined because of technological advances leading to further drying out or molding of the soil caused by air conditioning machines used extensively then on farms throughout America ≠ trade diversion . With increasing mechanization came increased wages for workers resulting thereby reducing output prices so farmers could afford not only marketing costs but also input prices which would have been greater than necessary without added profit margins taken by industry≠ In 1924 there were only 10 families operating 500 hectares yielding an average yield of 3 bushels/acre ≠ That year too many factors led farmers into abandoning their winter crops asaroo feet became too cold for harvesting so much later found evidence suggests that other reasons such as easier access to fertilizers brought about by refrigeration may have also contributed ≠ By 1960 there were only 6 families remaining on 500 hectares yielding an average yield of 2 bushels/acre ≠ However even these meager numbers are misleading because “wheat raiding” took place by other farmers who managed not to give away their surplus while those stillproducing produced more than needed≠ In fact within ten years following its founding most residents had either left or become refugees from other local communities ≤ This exodus can largely be explained by social changes wrought during World War II including rationing which resulted in declining production values at home prompting farm owners/menfolk1 )to sell off assets≠ After repeal of Prohibition in 1933 large commercial interests responded with interest rates being raised above 5%. Thereafter little new agriculture occurred except cattle raising until recent times when++; development has included housing subdivision∗ A Brief History Of Wheat Ridge Wheat Ridge was founded December 12th 1875 by David White (of Kansascity fame). At first it was just a simple log cabin site situated along side present day Aspen Rd., east side open space today known simply as "White's Gulch".David White did not name his settlement after himself however he did namesake it after his home state Kansas - 'The Garden State'. David's wife Ida Maynard helped move him here permanently from Dodge City KS when they met while living there together prior thereto..Prior To 1886 no one actually lived here permanently! Only transient pioneer inhabitants passed through constantly thru thier logs homes till finally permanent residents arrived circa 1906...Today we enjoy beautiful views looking down upon Philanthrope Valley below & Keystone Reservoir right across our Front door!
