Westminster was founded in 1876 by men from Colorado who were looking for a site for a new county seat. They selected the then-xeroxed and poorly drawn map of Westminster because it looked like an ideal place to build a courthouse. The original courthouse was built in 1879, but it was destroyed by fire in 1890. The townspeople rebuilt the courthouse and court house and started using it as their own government center. In 1907, the town renamed itself Westminster after King George V of England, which gave it more stability and helped to improve its image. In 1916, the United States Congress passed a resolution designating Westminster as the capital of Colorado. The town continued to serve as the capital until 1951 when Denver became the state capital.
