In 1990, a new mill opened up at present-day Longmont which continued production until 2003 when it stopped because of financial problems brought on by changing trends in the mining industry. Westminster is a city in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,373 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westminster was founded in 1876 as a small town on the east side of the Little Colorado River and grew rapidly due to its location near Colorado Springs and other major metropolitan areas. In 1963, it became an incorporated municipality and has since been expanding into adjacent counties. The first settlers in what is now Westminster were Native American traders who came downriver from Kansas during the Bridger Revolt of 1876. On December 5 that year, they met with six other groups traveling upriver from Fort Lyon to attack Ft. Collins and its garrison of 300 soldiers led by Colonel George Armstrong Custer; they were successful in capturing all but one wagon train, which they burned out of existence at Fort Lyon on January 12th (the only time this event happened in Wyoming). The remaining settlers arrived overland via Medicine Bow Pass and established their community around what is now Mesa Street along Cherry Creek where they built their homes using sod and earth plastered together with straw or buffalo dung for insulation against the cold winter months. They called themselves "Creek Indians" because there wasn't enough water available for them to build permanent villages closer to civilization (this changed when new wells were drilled nearby). In 1876, after taking some time away from his ranching business in Texas to help lead a Mayan-inspired uprising against Mexico's rule over Central America, Anglo settler James Worrell moved into what would become Westminster from Telluride about three miles west of present-day Mesa Street. Metro Councilwoman Betsy Johnsen once proclaimed “It could have been said then that one man had made all the difference: Hiram Searcy’s son Everett E Searcy Sr., who began working at Metropolitansharecar company doing route 77 bus operations out front until 1978 when he retired aged 73 years old!” This fact should be noted because without him much progress would not have been made towards developing newer commercial districts such as Brighton Center or Olympic Plaza!! However even beyond Metropolitansharecar company operated routes 27 & 30 which crossed 24th Ave @ Broadway afore turning northwest onto 14th St before terminating near Union Station!) . So Wilmington Rd becoming Gettysburg Blvd may have been less Of A Problem If Not For Mr.Searcy... Anyway continued growth ledto grander plansand aspirations by Mayor Harry S Truman who proposed havinga sports arena built specificallyfor volleyball matches&golf tournaments!!! Which didn't happen til 1981 though a new facility eventually did open called Continental Arena!) .
