Westminster, Colorado is a small city located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado. The population was 7,594 at the 2010 census. Westminster was established in 1868 as a result of the merger of two nearby towns, Asotin and Park City. It is named for John A. Westminster, who donated land to make it a town. The first settlers in Westminster were farmers who came from Illinois and Indiana. They built log cabins and raised livestock on their properties until they could build better homes and start growing crops. In 1887, Westminster became an incorporated town with a population of 527 people. It boasted three banks, ten churches, four newspapers, and two schools. In 1912, when Denver was founded as the capital of Colorado, Westminster became part of that city's school district. However, because its residents had voted not to become part of Denver's commercial or social life, they retained their own charter as an independent municipality with its own government and school board. In 1923, whenDenver merged with Aurora to form the current city limits for that area north of I-25 (currently known as Thornton), Westminister remained an unincorporated community within those limits until 1958 when it annexed into Aurora proper as part of that city's growth. As Aurora grew more populous over time and began annexing other communities eastward into its boundaries (including Northglenn and Golden) westward (including Park City), Westminister slowly lost ground to those expanding neighborhoods until finally being forced out by Aurora in 1998 when that city annexed all but one block west of I-25 (the last addition to what is now Thornton). According to historical records kept by both cities since then—and updated regularly by officials working for each—Aurora has demolished most of what once constituted Westminister’s original core cultural assets while neglecting or even destroying much remaining evidence attributable to that unique community history: buildings dating back to 1868–1920; businesses originally organized under municipal auspices such as banks; street names such as Main Street or Second Street; water features like Spring Creek orStream Drive;attocemetery fragments including fire hydrants still accessible today
