Westminster is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Junction–Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westminster was founded in 1876 by Czech immigrants. The town name is derived from Westminster Abbey in London and refers to its location on the banks of the Arkansas River downstream from Fort Yuma. After the war ended in 1945, many people left downtown for jobs outside of town because there weren't any open positions at those locations. However, some residents did stay to start small businesses orchards or build homes near I-25. In 1970s–1980s growth rates slowed due to economic difficulties throughout western Colorado which included high unemployment rates; however modest progress has been made since then towards reversing these trends by creating new jobs opportunities within downtown area Downtown streets are home to almost all types of businesses; this allows entrepreneurs more space without having competition from larger stores situated along side them
