He and his wife, Heta (née Fry), founded the townsite of Westminster on the east side of the San Isabel River. They named their new community after King George III of England because they were residents of that country at the time. The first post office opened in 1881. In 1912, Alice Morse moved to Westminster from Trinidad with her husband John Morse Sr., who had married her there about two years earlier. She became one of the most prominent women in the town and served as president of its Women's Club from 1923 to 1931. She also taught music and artistry to elementary school students for many years beginning in 1924 before retirement in 1951. In addition to her teaching career, Alice Morse was also a prolific author; she wrote over seventy books including nineteen children's books and thirteen novels. Her last book was published posthumously in 1984. In 2002, Westminster honored Alice Morse by naming its high school after her late husband as part of its centennial celebration program honoring Colorado natives who have made an significant impact on American culture and history (see List Of Westminister High Schools). After World War II ended%, many people left Westminster for reasons such as job opportunities or more open-minded attitudes towards new technology which characterized postwar America than did previous generations%. Some residents chose to stay because they could not find jobs elsewhere or because they found stability within a small town setting where everyone knew each other well enough to form social clubs and support one another through shared interests such as agriculture or fishing.
