Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Thornton is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains. It is bordered by Horseshoe Canyon to the north and east, Brighton to the south and west, and Nederland to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Thornton were fur traders in 1819-20. They traveled up the Arkansas River valley from their base at Telluride before encountering friendly Native Americans living in what is now Thornton. The prospectors soon realized that they could get rich mining gold and silver in this remote area. In 1865, Don Carlos Baca opened a gristmill in what is now Thornton after finding coal deposits nearby. The mill became one of America's biggest commercial enterprises until it closed its doors in 1903 due to competition from larger mills near Denver. In 1901, Arapaho Indians began ranchering on land downstream from Thornton known as "The Giants' Garden." This event spurred development of nearby towns such as Brighton and Nederland around this same time period. By 1915, there were over 50 businesses operating in Thornton with an average population of 200 residents. Many of these businesses were founded by entrepreneurs who invested their money into new technology or products such as automobiles or radios. Timber production also played a significant role during this time; local mills processed timber into lumber for buildings and other objects until World War II when forestation changed how much lumber was needed for homes and other purposes Today, Thornton remains a small town with close-knit community spirit that helps make it vibrant culturally speaking both inside and outside its borders As oil exploration continues to expand throughout Weld County, interest has recently arisen within Thornton itself for developing properties within its limits if possible given current economic conditions currently,, no major development plans have surfaced despite numerous requests over several years

There were also several other businesses located in or near downtownThornton during this time including Mr James's grocery store which opened in 1916 and remained open until 1984; Bemis Tire & Rubber Co., which opened in 1922; First National Bank; Commerce Trust Company; Western Electric Telephone Company (later Verizon Communications); Lumber Yard News Service; Mrs Jane Fenton's Bake Shop (now defunct); Mrs John Fenton's Bakery (); Fowler Ice Cream Social Club (); Republican Women’s Club (). In 1954, when Aurora merged with Denver to form the city of Denver-Aurora, Thornton ceased to exist as an independent village and became part of what would be called "the new city". However, like most villages withinDenver-Aurora at this time it continued to maintain its own government and economy until 1970 when all villages within Denver-Aurora were consolidated into one municipal body under Mayor Donald Weissman (). Today you can still find some remnants of what once existed at Thornton such as the A&P Sawmills Ltd., Fowler Ice Cream Social Club (), Mrs Jane Fenton's Bake Shop (), Mrs John Fenton's Bakery (), First National Bank & Trust Co., Western Electric Telephone Company (later Verizon Communications), Lumber Yard News Service(), Republican Women’s Club (), etc.; however most residents have left for better opportunities elsewhere withinDenver-Aurora or outside Colorado altogether since today there are no settlements within either municipality other than Auroras industrial zone known as "The New City".
Thornton was founded in 1872 by George Thornton and his brother, John. The town was named after George's father, who had died in a hunting accident near Thornton. The brothers built the first store in the town and later became involved in the oil business. In 1902, they founded the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The company produced coal, oil, and natural gas until it merged with ConocoPhillips in 2006.
