Thornton, Colorado is one of the oldest communities in the United States. The town was founded on the site of a military fortification in 1872 and it has since grown to become a regional center for industry, commerce and education. The city was named after Major General George Armstrong Custer, who died at Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Thornton also played a major role in the American Civil War, serving as an important military base and supply depot. During that time, some of the most famous battles fought in Colorado were fought here including Adobe Walls and Fort Lewis. After the war, Thornton underwent significant growth as an industrial center thanks to its location near Denver and its access to railroad lines. In addition to its economic importance, Thornton also became known for its popular outdoor activities such as fishing and hunting. These days, Thornton is home to a number of cultural landmarks such as the Thornton Historical Museum and Pikes Peak Monument which are both worth visiting for their individual Historic features or because they provide insights into America’s past.

Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. Thornton is located in the eastern part of the state and is bordered by Aspen to the north, Loveland to the east, Durango to the south, and Montrose to the west. The first permanent settler in Thornton was David Smedley in 1868. The name "Thornton" was given by George Baugh on November 30, 1865 from a description of an area east of what is now downtown Thornton as "a place full of rocks".[4] At that time there were only a few scattered pioneer families living near what would become downtown Thornton. The first store opened in 1870 and within two years had developed into an important commercial center for eastern Weld County with a variety of businesses including lumberyards, breweries, post office, schools and churches. By 1880 Thornton had became one of the largest towns in Colorado with over 2,000 residents. In 1915 incorporation occurred which made Thornton one of sixteen towns formed during Colorado's statewide consolidation process under state law known as "the Granite State merge". However due to financial difficulties some residents voted not to incorporation while others supported it; this led to tension between those who wanted incorporation and those who felt they had been taken advantage of byudden developers. In 1916-17 negotiations began for a new courthouse which eventually replaced both previous buildings as well as creating more space for development around it. In 1923 $1 million was raised through local sales taxmissiles (later renamed stamps) which funded construction projects such as Interstate 25 along old US 66 corridor from Loveland through Aspen and Carbondale across Tioga Pass into Denver finally opening up all areas north of I-25 within ten years including most parts of today's Thornton.[5] Today much has changed since then with Downtown being redeveloped into an arts district complete with galleries and restaurants; Main Street becoming home to many small businesses; several large shopping malls dotting I-25 throughout counties surrounding Denver; major highways running next door providing easy access to everything westernColorado has to offer; oil refineries just east off I-25 providing good job opportunities etc.; but smaller community features remain like General Store Historic District (now closed), Schools Stakeholders Association meetings being held at homecoming parade floats each year on or around 4th July (and other events), annual Church Picnic taking place at Lebanon Park nearby on either Memorial Day or Fourth Of July weekend etc., just like back when life revolved around farming

In 1916, two years before Ulysses S Grant's death which caused the Great Depression that struck America during that time period, Jens Olsen founded Olsen & Company which served as a cornerstone of what would become known as downtownThornton during that time period In 1924, gold was discovered at Cripple Creek and quickly become one of the most important minerals found near Greeley while also sparking development around this area including construction of both Colorado State University (now CSU)and Denver General Hospital In response to this rapid growth and change local leaders formed what would come to be known as THE COMMUNITY BUREAU OF COMMUNITY SERVICES or CBCS for short With early approval from then- Mayor George Benton Jr.,THE CBCS bought land adjacent to present day First Federal Savings Bank building on 7th Avenue North with plans to create an open space where citizens could gather for community services such as music performances or picnics
