Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,713 at the 2010 census. Thornton is part of the Greeley–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Thornton" comes from the nearby Thornton Mountains and ravines. The town was founded in 1868 by Horace Greeley and James A. Thornton as a ranching community on the east side of the mountains near present-day Aspen. For many years it served as Greeley's only village, until Aurorasville (later Aurora) grew up around it and supplanted Thornton as Greeleys' most important center of industry and trade. Though little changed since its heyday in the 1920s—a trading post with a general store, two saloons, two blacksmiths, four schools (grades one through eight), a Methodist church and an opera house—the old downtown core has been refurbished for new residents over recent decades. Today's main shopping district features several high-end stores including Sears, JCPenney and Macy's; restaurants including Thai Express and El Pueblo Mexican restaurant; championship golf courses including Reunion Hills Country Club and Wanamaker Golf Course; and country estate homes surrounded by manicured gardens with miles of hiking trails within easy reach. Downtown Thornton also hosts several annual events that draw people from all over the area: art festivals throughout October; rodeo weekends during April/May or September/October; picnic weekends each summer near Aspen Lake; Shakespearein' America week in late July or early August; Highland Games in late May or early June; kids' programming during winter months only at One Stop Playground outside of town limits

Thornton began as a small mining town in 1876. It became a county seat in 1912, and was the site of the Colorado State Capitol from 1912 to 1922. The Thornton School District was created in 1907 and Thornton High School opened in 1927.
