Thornton is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,780 at the 2010 census. Thornton is the home of Thornton Independent School District and the adjacent Pueblo Memorial Hospital. The first white person to live in Thornton was George A. Smith in 1878. He had a sawmill and gristmill on US 31 and built a cabin around it for himself and his family. In 1887, he married Jane Addams and moved to what is now Thornton Village. In 1907, John Smeaton bought land east of US 31 near present-day Pueblo Memorial Hospital; he named it Tony's Valley after his son Tony Smeaton Jr., who helped him develop the area. The village began as a community of about 100 homes with seven schools, two churches, an grocery store, post office, bank, doctor's office and hotel. By 1920 there were 15 homes and five businesses in Thornville Village; by 1930 there were 30 homes with 16 businesses including a newsagent/bakery/gas station/telephone company all within one mile of each other on U.S 31 (now Ralston Avenue). In 1940, the government acquired more than 640 acres (247 hectares) northwest of Thornton Village from Missoula Coal & Iron Company for use as federal public lands; this included most of present-day Thornton Village except for some land that was sold to local residents following World War II as part of the "New Mexico Land Grant" program which gave parcels to new citizens in exchange for their loyalty during wartime times when America needed people to work farms or build airfields etc... After years of planning by various government entities such as American Recovery Administration (ARA) officials working with locals through WRA grantees like Mrs. Addams herself - her daughter Cora - ARA donated 155 acres (60 hectares) northW side OF current Pueblo Memorial Hospital site along Ralston Ave which became known as "Thornton Place". This donation made possible not only development but also establishment of city hall adjacent to hospital complex housing both City Council Chambers plus Police Department substation & fire department station... By 1907, Thornton had a population of over 5,000 people. The town was renamed Colorado Springs in 1911 after President William Howard Taft's visit to that city. In 1926, the Stapleton Hotel burned down and killed 25 people; this event is generally considered to be the start of the Denver-Colorado Springs metropolitan area.
