The first Europeans to visit Thornton were fur traders from the Northwest Territories who were looking for new sources of fur goods to sell in North America. They named their settlement after Sir John A. Thornton, 1st Baronet (1785-1844), British minister responsible for Canada East during the mid-19th century. The town was founded on March 20, 1868 by Colonel George A. Custer and his officers of the 7th Cavalry Regiment as Fort Lyon after they retreated from Battle Creek Expedition against Ulysses S. Grant's forces near that location four days earlier. The post office was established in 1869 and later renamed Thornton when it became part of Douglas County. The first school opened in 1870 and was known as Our Lady Of Mount Carmel School until it moved to its present location in 1887 when it became one of two schools in the county seat (the other being Placerville). From 1886 until 1957, Thornton served as both county seat and central headquarters for Douglas County government. In 1957, all county government operations were transferred to Trinidad where they remain today with only limited ceremonial use aside from occasional meetings within the walls of Trinidad courthouse currently taking place less than a kilometer away from downtown Thornton proper

Thornton is a small town located in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 546 at the 2010 census. Thornton is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thornton has been inhabited by Native Americans since the prehistory of this region. In 1868, Thornton was platted and named after General James A. Thornton who served as governor of Colorado from 1865 to 1867 and as chief justice on the Colorado Supreme Court from 1869 to 1871. The first post office opened in 1870, and Thornton became a city in 1902. The original residents of Thornton were mainly farmers who grew wheat and other crops near their homes or worked on ranches outside the town limits. By 1920, however, many businesses had been established in what is now Thornton due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Denver and Aurora, two major cities inColorado at that time. The most prominent business owner before World War II was Harry Hays who ran J C Penney department store from his home until his death in 1961. Other early businesses include two movie theaters which showed films until 1957 (the maximum number allowed under then local zoning) and an insurance agency which closed its doors in 1951 but reopened several times over the years including once during World War II when it furnished insurance for military personnel living inside Fort Carson National Monument adjacent to town center).
